The New Living Way

Introduction

The Law was holy, righteous, and good (Romans 7:12). Yet it was powerless to bring people into maturity or impart life. If the Law could have perfected us, Christ’s death would have been unnecessary (Galatians 3:21).

But God had already promised a better way — a New Covenant, a New Living Way. The mystery hidden in God for ages is now revealed: God would put His Spirit within us, write His laws on our hearts, and create a new humanity in Christ.

I. The Law’s Weakness Exposed

Hebrews 7:18–19 — “There is indeed a setting aside of the former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness, for the Law perfected nothing.”
Romans 8:3 — “For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son.”
Romans 7:14 — The Law was spiritual, but man was carnal. The carnal mind was hostile to God and could not submit to His spiritual laws (Romans 8:7).

Teaching Point: God did not lower His standard; He made a way for us to fulfill them, making us alive through the Spirit, he raised us up so to fulfill them instead of lowering, by changing our nature.

Illustration: The Law is like a treadmill — it makes you sweat, it shows you your weakness, but you never actually get healthy and whole. It reveals effort, weakness, but not progress, it has no power to benefit you.

II. God’s Promised Solution

Jeremiah 31:33 — “I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it.”
Ezekiel 36:26–27 — “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes.”
Hebrews calls this the “new and living way” (Hebrews 10:20).
In Jesus is life and that life is a light unto men (John 1:4)
Jesus came to give to those who receive him the authority to be born of God (John 1:12-13).

Modern Parallel: Think of a phone without a battery. You can press the buttons, swipe the screen, but nothing happens. The Law was like the phone’s operating system — perfect in design — but without the Spirit (the battery), it could not function in us.

III. The Mystery of the New Creation

Romans 7:6 — “We serve in newness of Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 — “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power and love and sound mind"
Romans 8:15-16 — God's Spirit is not one of slavery but of adoption that cries Abba Father and testifies we are his children.
2 Peter 1:4 — We are made partakers of the divine nature.

Illustration: Imagine trying to graft fruit onto a dead branch. No matter how skilled the gardener, the branch cannot bear fruit unless it has life. The New Covenant doesn’t just graft us into Christ — it gives us His very life.

IV. The Righteous Requirement Fulfilled

Romans 8:4 — “…so that the righteous requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
Hebrews 9:14 — The blood of Christ cleanses the conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
2 Corinthians 3:18 — We are transformed into Christ’s image by the Spirit.
Galatians 3:3 — “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”

Modern Parallel: Many Christians today still live as if they’re under the Law, on probation with God — constantly checking boxes, measuring themselves by rules, and fearing failure, slaves to fear. But if we are led by the Spirit, we are not under law and condemnation. Living, not to laws and principles, but according to the Spirit we fulfill God's righteous requirements.

V. Living in the New Living Way

We are no longer under the Law but under grace (Romans 6:14).
2 Corinthians 12:9 — Grace is not license to sin but empowerment: the Spirit enables obedience from the heart.
Romans 7:4 — We belong to Christ “in order that we may bear fruit for God.”
Grace, Truth, and the Spirit work in harmony. Grace reigns through the gift of righteousness unto eternal life (Romans 5:21) and the Spirit is life through righteousness (Romans 8:10).

Illustration: Think of a marriage. A wife doesn’t love her husband because the marriage license commands her to. She loves him because her heart is bound to him. In the same way, we don’t obey God because of an external code, but because His Spirit has bound our hearts to Him in love.

Conclusion

The Law was weak through the flesh, but God’s the Spirit of Christ has solved the problem. Christ’s death established the New Covenant, and His resurrection life is imparted to us by the Spirit.

Now, as new creations, we walk in the New Living Way — empowered to fulfill God’s righteous requirements, not by the letter, but by the Spirit.

Closing Exhortation:
Stop striving in the flesh to do what only the Spirit of truth can accomplish. Do not again go back to a yoke of slavery, to written code, laws, precepts, principles that have been proven to have no power over the gratification of the flesh.

Yield to Him who is life and feed on him daily. Trust in his promises, of the promised Holy Spirit in us, writing God’s law on your heart. Live not as those bound to the old written code, but as those who have died with Christ to sin and the law, and are alive to God, in the Spirit.

Lord we pray, conform your church to the image of your Son. The greatest glory a Father could desire, what you have purposed in the church according to your good will, that your children come into existence like you in divine nature and have fellowship with you eternally.

The New Living Way "... Now, at the present released from the Law, having died in that which held us captive, so that we serve in newness of Spirit and not the old written code " -- Romans 7:16 Paul states that we are now united to Christ in his death and also raised with him into newness of life. What held them captive was sin but also the Law, it was a guardian until the appointed time God would send a Messiah (see School Master ). Paul uses the metaphor of marriage to describe how we are released from the Law; like a wife whose husband dies, now she is released from the Law and can marry another, so also have we died with Christ and are released from the Law and bound to Christ in a new covenant.
