Putting On the New Self
Theme: Spiritual Growth & Identity in Christ
Key Scripture: “And to put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” — Ephesians 4:24 (ESV)
🕊️ Day’s Reflection
The Christian journey is not about becoming a better version of our old selves. It is about walking in The New Living Way, putting on the new man created in the likeness of God. Scripture calls us to put on the new man, and this call is not symbolic or abstract. It is a command grounded in spiritual truth and lived out in daily walking as Christ walked.
📜 Scripture for Meditation
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”Ephesians 4:22–24 (ESV)
“To put off your old man, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”Colossians 3:10 (ESV)
“And have put on the new man, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”Romans 13:14 (ESV)
“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”
💡 Devotional Thought
Putting on the new man is like dressing with intention each day. It’s not about pretending to be someone we’re not—it’s about living out who we truly are in Christ. The old man, shaped by sin and self-interest, no longer defines us. In its place, we are to be clothed with Christ’s character: humility, love, truth, and holiness. This is profound wisdom for the child of God who is in the battle for their mind.
Putting on the new man is putting on Christ Jesus, as the new man is created in the likeness of God and Christ. “The Son exists the radiance of glory and the exact representation of his nature, both sustaining all by the word of his power, making purification of sin, sitting down at the right hand of the majesty on high” - Hebrews 1:3.
“In the face of Jesus shines the glory of God” in 2 Corinthians 4:6, refers to the belief that Jesus Christ perfectly reveals God’s nature and character. John writes that Jesus existed with God in the beginning and was God – John 1:1-2.
Putting on the new man is look with unveiled face as if looking into a mirror the glory of the Lord, being transformed to the same image, glory to the extent of glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). This is the key to putting on the new; abiding in the words of Jesus, the transformative truth that has power to save our souls. So we know and are set free.
Each day, we choose to put on the new man, to align our thoughts, actions, and desires with the Spirit. It’s not meant to be a burden to bear, some dutiful mindset of a slave, like one in captivity hoping in the end they will be told well done —it’s meant to be joy fulfilled, like someone achieving and reaching a destiny and purpose. We are becoming who we were always meant to be.
