What is Believing?

I am the bread of life, the ones coming to me, not one hungers and the ones believing to the extent of me not one thirsts (John 6:35)

We see in the scriptures the connection between belief and salvation, the people asked "what must I do to be saved?" and they responded "believe upon the Lord Jesus and be saved.." (Acts 16:30-31). In John 6 we see the connection between believing and eating and drinking, Jesus said that which gives life is real food and real drink. Certainly, one must believe but what is believing, what can one do to believe and be saved?

rather what does it say, 'the word is near you in that your mouth and in your heart, this exists the word of faith that we proclaim (Romans 10:8)

The word mouth is στόμα (stoma) and has a deeper meaning than just speaking words. "... for from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). Jesus said, the heart determines what comes out of the mouth, thus how can evil speak good? How can a thorn bush produce grapes? Therefore the word being in your heart means something has changed in regards to your heart, the word has been planted. James writes, the word of God is implanted having power to save your soul (James 1:21). What happens in salvation first happens with the heart as what comes out of the heart reflects the inner being. Thus Paul states it perfectly, the word of faith is in your heart, and mouth and confessing (homologeó, from homo "same" and lego "speak") is speaking the same, of the believing that occurred in the heart. You are speaking of the same change that occurred in your inner being, "from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."

for you have been born again not of perishable seed but of imperishable, by means of the living and enduring word of God (1 Peter 1:23)
The connection between being born again or born anew is inseparable from believing, as Paul writes "you also in him hearing the word of truth, the good news of your salvation, in him also believing, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.." (Ephesians 1:13-14). This sealing is through the Spirit which is one of adoption, that we were predestined for, to be adopted as "his own" children, thus to finish the verse Paul writes, "... who [the Spirit] exists the guarantor of our inheritance to the extent redemption of his possession, to the praise of his glory." Jesus said his words were Spirit and truth. This connection between new birth, and believing is inseparable.

Jesus answered them saying to them, this exists the work of God, so that you believe to the extent of him whom he sent (John 6:29)
The people asked Jesus what miraculous sign he would show so that they could believe. These are the same people who saw him heal and cast out demons and who followed him out into the countryside, were they saw he him miraculously feed thousands from five loaves of bread and two fish, and he had walked on water across the sea, and now they are before him asking what sign he would perform so they could believe. Remember the story of Lazarus and the rich man, when both died the rich man pleaded to send Lazarus, raise him from the dead, to warn his sons but he was told "they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead" (Luke 16:19-31). Of course Jesus rose from the dead and still many did not believe. Jesus appropriately answered them, believing is the work of God.

There is believing unto salvation and there is faith, they both have the same root word. Faith is assigned to each in measure (Romans 12:3). Jesus is the author and maturer of faith (Hebrews 12:2). All that we have, we have received (1 Corinthians 4:7). Salvation is a gift from God that comes through faith (Ephesians 2:8). Jesus authors and matures our faith, so faith is given and it increases, "rather that faith from hearing, now, that heard through the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17). The gospel is the power of God, unto salvation, to all who believe (Romans 1:16-17). For through proclaiming the gospel the power of God works to the extent that people believe and are saved. Timely are those who preach the good news, as some will hear the gospel and believe, but not all will listen to the good news and believe (Romans 10:15-17).

for the bread of God exists that which comes from heaven and gives life to the world (John 6:33)
The Spirit is one of life, and new birth comes through the Spirit by hearing and believing in the words of Jesus. Paul writes, a person is a Jew inwardly in the new covenant whereby there is is a circumcision of the heart by the Spirit (Romans 2:9). In John 6, we see many turned away from Jesus because of what he said, they must eat his flesh and drink his blood. There was a missing ingredient in their believing, that of the Spirit. Jesus said to those the Father gives him he would turn none away and that they could not come to him unless God granted it and the Spirit was drawing them to him through his words which exist Spirit and truth. They could not believe in Jesus unless God intervened, thus when the people asked what they must do to believe, Jesus said, believing is the work of God.

Read John 6:35-40, Jesus said he was the bread of life, and if you eat you will have life. All you need to do is come to him and believe. But how do you believe? You must come to him, we see this condition. Some of them came to him but did not believe, so there must be more, and his response to this, is all that the Father gives him comes to him... this is the will of the Father that all given to him he will lose none and all who beholds the Son and believes in him will have eternal life. The coming to Jesus must be through hearing his words and the Spirit drawing. So one must come and hear and behold and listen and consider the words of Jesus and through his words the miraculous work of God, the power of God through the gospel, to the extent of salvation, occurs. Certainly. we see the connection between believing through hearing his words and God's power to bring about salvation through the Spirit of life.

I tell you the solemn truth the one believing has eternal life, I am the bread of life... I am the living bread that came down from heaven, if anyone eats of this bread, he lives for all time and the bread which I give exists my flesh, on behalf of life to the world (John 6:51)
The answer to what sign would Jesus perform so that they could believe was "I am living bread that came down from heaven." Moses, the people said, gave manna from heaven so what sign would Jesus give? Jesus said "the ones believing has eternal life, I am the bread of life" (John 6:47-48). Here Jesus connects having eternal life with eating the bread of life. Have you eaten of living bread? Have you tasted that the Lord is good? There is living bread that came down from heaven. They saw him and touched him and proclaim him to us, concerning the word of life, eternal life (1 John 1:1-4).

the one feeding on my flesh and drinking my blood has eternal life ... for my flesh is real food and my blood real drink, the ones who eat my flesh and drink my blood abides in me just as I in them (John 6:53-57)
This offended many of the disciples and they turned away from following Jesus. Jesus responded by saying "it is the Spirit that gives life, not the flesh, the words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and life, but there are some from you who do not believe, for from the beginning Jesus knew who did not believe..." (John 6:63-64). As a kid I heard so many things that I needed to do to be saved, walk down the aisle, raise my hand, surrender my heart, say a prayer, get baptized... you name it I did it. It was later in life that I believed, during a church service, without doing any of the things above, I had come to listen and I heard the words of Jesus and believed. God saved me, by grace through faith, my salvation was a gift of God.

Believing is something amazing from God, I truly do not understand it all, but I do believe it is the work and power of God unto salvation through preaching of the gospel. All we can do is come to Jesus and hear his words then the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. We can only come to him if the Father grants it, the Spirit draws, and believing, the work of God, brings about a sealing of the Holy Spirit, becoming a child of God, born of the Spirit. A child John writes knows the Father and that his sins are forgiven. There are three that testify; spirit, blood, and water. These testimonies are from God and are greater than that of man. No matter what we do, it is these testimonies from God that testify that we have truly believed.

The Crucible

" The LORD will go forth like a warrior, He will arouse His zeal like a man of war. He will utter a shout, yes, He will raise a war cry. He will prevail against His enemies ." 1 He will arouse His zeal like a man of war. The definition of zeal is great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective. It is this time, to arouse zeal, shout, raise a war cry! As Paul writes, " In diligence not lagging in spirit being fervent serving the Lord ." 2 Our energy comes in the bond of brotherhood, formed in the crucible of combat. A crucible is place of severe test or trial, it is derived from Latin crucibulum ("night-lamp, metallurgic melting-pot"), and is a derivative of crux ("cross"). 3   The Bible speaks of the crucible of the cross for Jesus and for those who follow Him. The purpose of a soldier is two-fold; to accomplish the mission and to care for one another, as commanded. Each soldier has a role to play on a team. Without knowin...

One Grace

" moreover,  One, to each of us has been given Grace, according to the measure of the gift of Christ ." 1 Grace is a founding principle of Christianity. It is by Grace we grow into the fullness of Christ through faith; " to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. " 2  Without Grace we will never reach this fullness. The weakness in the Law was it attempted to do it in the flesh, and people failed over and over, so God in His infinite wisdom, unveiled this mystery, through faith in Christ we have grace to boldly approach His throne of Grace, to receive grace and mercy as needed! This gift of Grace is properly understood by examining this verse in three parts;  moreover,  One Grace, to each of us has been given, according to the measure of the gift of Christ . First, we understand,  One   grace, it is easy to miss the  One,  and this verse is translated in different ways, I believe it says One Grace and i...

Those He Calls He Equips

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen . Hebrews 13:20-21 When God calls us he equips us, the God of Peace, the one who brought us from the dead by the blood of the Eternal Covenant, will equip you so to do his will. So in this concept of being equipped, we see the calling being irrevocable. "For it is God who works in you to Will and to act on behalf of his good pleasure" ( Philippians 2:13 ).  God called you, he's working in you equipping you to work on behalf of his good pleasure. "So that the man of God may be complete fully equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:17 .  In Hebrews 12 we read God disciplines those he loves, so that we share in his holy character. As the scrip...

Word Of Life

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life. " 1 Jesus is the Word, He was in the beginning with God. 2  All things were made through Him. He is the Word and Light of men, the way, the path, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." 4  Thus we can say as the Psalmist, Jesus, the Word, is a Lamp unto my feet, and a Light unto my path. 5  "In him was life, and the life was the light of men." 6  Concerning the Word of Life, " the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life ," Proclaimed, that our joy may be complete, a glory like that in the beginning, fellowship with the Father, with one another, and with his Son Jesus Christ, the Word of Life. "You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot...

The New Living Way

The New Living Way "... Now, at the present released from the Law, having died in that which held us captive, so that we serve in newness of Spirit and not the old written code " -- Romans 7:16 Paul states that we are now united to Christ in his death and also raised with him into newness of life. What held them captive was sin but also the Law, it was a guardian until the appointed time God would send a Messiah (see School Master ). Paul uses the metaphor of marriage to describe how we are released from the Law; like a wife whose husband dies, now she is released from the Law and can marry another, so also have we died with Christ and are released from the Law and bound to Christ in a new covenant. The purpose of this is that we live in a new living way of the Spirit and not fleshly through the old written code or Mosaic Law. " So then brothers, you also have died to the Law through the body of Christ to the extent you exist by creation of another, the one raising you f...

New Testament Growth in Christ: From Foundation to Fullness

New Testament Growth in Christ: From Foundation to Fullness The New Testament presents a vibrant and multifaceted picture of spiritual growth, not as a static event but as a dynamic, lifelong journey for the believer. This journey, with emphasis on a strong foundation, progresses through a transformative process of maturity forged by endurance, ultimately aiming for the profound goal of experiencing the "fullness of God in Christ." The Foundation: A New Creation The inception of growth in Christ is marked by a radical spiritual new birth, a foundational shift that defines the Christian experience. It is not merely a moral reformation, but a divine act of creation. The apostle Paul declares this truth in 2 Corinthians 5:17 : " Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come ." This new creation is initiated by faith in Jesus Christ, where believers are justified and reconciled to God through His sacrifice. ...

Truth All Around You

Stand then girding your loins in truth and putting on the breastplate of righteousness. * How can a soldier stand in battle if he has not been prepared, trained? How can a house stand if it has been built on sand? How can we stand against spiritual forces if we have not been prepared? Our battle is not against flesh and blood so in regards to such, what good is armor to a child or how can one stained with dirty clothes stand with a defiled conscious? To stand one must be prepared, be his workmanship, someone prepared beforehand to do battle. For this purpose you begin girding your loins in truth, putting on truth, wrapping truth all around you. ... girding your loins in truth... * The word girding is perizōnnymi (from peri "about, around" and zōnnymi "put on") meaning around about put on. Often gird your loins with truth is translated as putting on a belt. Surely we can say truth holds on the garments and confidence in truth is important in standing. I like th...

First Fruit Offering

through his plan, he brought us forth through the word of truth to the extent we exist a kind of first fruit of all he created (James 1:18) There is so much in this verse that we could spend time on, like the phrase "through his plan." But we want to focus primarily on what it means for us to be the first fruit of all that God created. he has made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure which he purposed in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time (Ephesians 1:9) Paul writes one of the spiritual blessings that we receive in Christ is that God has made known to us the mystery of his will. A plan for fullness, in which he is working out according to what he purposed in Christ for our good, that we are being conformed to the image of Christ. We relate this to the phrase in our featured verse, "of all he created."  Now God's glory was manifested through creation since the beginning of time. However, God's purpose and plan that is bein...

Putting On the New Self

Putting On the New Self Theme: Spiritual Growth & Identity in Christ Key Scripture: “And to put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” — Ephesians 4:24 (ESV) 🕊️ Day’s Reflection The Christian journey is not about becoming a better version of our old selves. It is about walking in The New Living Way , putting on the new man created in the likeness of God. Scripture calls us to put on the new man , and this call is not symbolic or abstract. It is a command grounded in spiritual truth and lived out in daily walking as Christ walked. 📜 Scripture for Meditation 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Ephesians 4:22–24 (ESV) “To put off your old man, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new man, created after the likeness of...
