"If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would
not be guilty of sin; but now they have seen and hated both Me and My
Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause."1
This word for hated means properly, to detest (on a comparative basis); hence, denounce; to love someone or something less than someone (something) else, i.e. to renounce one choice in favor of another. Jesus hung out with tax collectors and sinners, and they despised Him for this. He broke the traditions of the elders, they denounced and sought to destroy Him for this. Undeserving he was hated, undeserving we are loved.
It is an amazing thing, that the children would hate the Father, he had lavished upon them riches and wealth. Even more, they hated the Son the Father sent to redeem them, to reconcile them to the Father. They did so without cause, this word means something freely done (as gratis), i.e. without "cause"; unearned (undeserved); freely given (without cost) hence not done out of mere obligation or compulsion. The hatred was undeserved, and is redemption, the forgiveness of sin, the forgiveness of such hatred. "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace,"5 Thus from the riches of His grace we receive the forgiveness of sin, abundant grace, and the gift of righteousness.
"and if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace."2
It is by faith that it be according to grace, "by grace we are saved." Though they hated Him, he would become as a servant, even to the point of death on a cross, laying down His life for those who are chosen. "So that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus."3 Grace is undeserved favor, favor, disposed to, inclined, favorable towards, leaning towards to share benefit – properly, grace, kindness. The hatred toward Him was undeserved and so is His grace and kindness toward us.

love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not
of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world."4
