“Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.”1 John 3:22
To prevail means to be in force; to have effect, power, or influence; to be predominant. Prevailing prayer has superior force or influence and it is the prayer of the righteous that prevails. We must keep His commandment and what commandment do we keep? John writes, “this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.1 John 3:23 So we see as James speaks faith without deeds of love is not real faith, and as Paul agrees, nothing else counts but faith working by love. Living to rules and regulations, law and principles is not pleasing in His sight, in fact such external obedience is appealing to the flesh, unlike faith which contradicts earthly senses. One must believe and abide in the Son of God, who is the author and perfecter of faith. A measure is given to those who believe and to who has more will be given. Without faith it is impossible to please Him. Hebrews 11:16 And faith without love is nothing.1 Corinthians 13:2 Jesus said the world will know He is from the Father by our unity, and that we are His disciples by our love for one another. Those who abide in love abide in Him, these are obedient to His commandments, and the prayers of these avail much.
“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.”1 John 5:2
Do you see that loving God and His children and one and the same? Do you love me? Feed my sheep. If you love me, you love the children of God. I can not say I love God and keep His commandments then not love His children. If I love Him then I love them. And surely I would rather lay down my life for him than cause my brother to stumble. It is the principle of leadership in the kingdom, the first become last. One who walks in error has not overcome the wicked one. If he leads then it is as a blind man, those who follow him will fall in a ditch with him. This is why we pray for those who have wrong us, and why we love those who persecute us, and why we love our brother, that God may give him Life. There are no lies in truth. If my brother continues to walk in error then I love him and pray for him. “If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life.”1 John 5:16
“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”1 John 5:14
It is an amazing thing, "Prevailing is the prayer of the righteous, much it accomplishes."James 5:16 It is a terrible thing for evil authority but for the children of God it brings godly change. If a brother walks in error, then ask “and God will give him life.” Such is the love of God that we should love one another as Christ loved us, giving himself as a sweet smelling sacrifice for us. Such is unlike the mindset of the Pharisee, judgmental, without mercy, that which claims to love God but neglects the more important things of God, like faith and love for his brother. A prayer that gives Life, is one that will produce fruit that leads unto sanctification, which end is Life. It is a prayer of love, that my brother is not destroyed by the evil one, but overcomes. “And this is what overcomes, our faith.”1 John 5:4 This is what counts, I build up my brother in faith working by love. We have this confidence in Him, that if I keep His commandments, He will hear my prayers and give Life to my brother.
