"present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to
life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For you will not rule over sin, indeed, under the Law but under grace."1
It is an amazing concept that one will rule over sin under Grace. We see that ruling over sin begins with a free gift, which we receive by faith in Christ, "those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ."2 So we see grace reigns through the gift of righteousness, "as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."3
"There is therefore now no condemnation in Christ Jesus, not according to the flesh walk but according to the Spirit."3
This is an importance understanding, no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Now, sin still dwells in my flesh, so I can walk in the flesh, thus Paul is writing from the perspective that the Spirit is my true nature. Therefore I am to put to death the deeds of the flesh through the Spirit. "Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God."2 We have peace with God, bold access by faith to the throne of Grace. It is important that one has understanding in Grace for the ruling over sin. It begins with the free gift of righteousness, and it is a participating in His death, so to participate in His Life, as Christ crucified the flesh, I reckon mine dead, and I will do so under Grace, not under the Law.
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has
to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."4
The Law entered that sin might become increasingly sinful, and sin was imputed toward man. The curse of the Law says if you break one bit, you break it all. Why would anyone want to live under the Law? Jesus was the only man to live a sinless life, thus by the one righteous act many will be made righteous. The Law entered thus judgement, condemnation, the Law having power through the fear of death, and punishment. Learning to have a renewed mind of being under Grace is important in ruling over sin. Under fear and condemnation, Paul writes one did not rule over sin, as sin abounded under the Law. Trying to purge your sin through sorrow or regret is the devils playground, which seeks to produce death.
"who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."6
It is truth, put children under the Law and it will kill them. Sin will take advantage and produce the idea that life is elsewhere, it doesn't bring them to Christ as the carnal mind is not subject to the laws of God, neither can it be. Some would say that the Law has a purpose that those under condemnation will turn to Christ. But as I study the scriptures I am finding the opposite is true. "For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." Surely the motivation is different, "And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him."7 If we have this righteousness in Christ, we have His nature, and the fruit of the gift of righteousness leads to sanctification and its end Life.
"now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life."7
The fruit you get is the fruit of righteousness sown in peace, trust and rest. This is the opposite of the Law, judgement and condemnation, such kills, produces death, whereas the gift of righteousness leads us unto Life, not death. How important is trusting in God and entering into His rest, it is for the purpose of sanctification, the end of such is Life. The ministry of the new covenant is not a ministry of condemnation, it is not putting people under the Law, or leading people to death, in the hopes they may find life, no, the new is the opposite as those "brought from death to life," of righteousness, peace, and of the Spirit of Life. It begins with receiving by faith the gift of grace and righteousness. Ruling over death and sin under grace through the fruit of righteousness, not under the Law. There is no condemnation for those in Christ, period! "Present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness."
