In freedom, Christ has set us free, stand firm therefore and do not again tangle yourselves in the yoke of slavery.1
Freedom comes in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. When we believe in Jesus we are no longer slaves but sons, joint heirs with Christ. The heir is no longer a slave but a child. A child is like a slave, under managers and tutors, until the time set by the Father. In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.2 But when the time came, God sent forth his son born of the flesh, born under the Law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.3 Like orphaned children who have become sons and daughters, we have received the redemptive love of God, of family. So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Sin no longer defines a child of God, we are no longer a slave to sinful nature and are new creations, in our inner being. This new creation is without sin, but we still live in a body that is not glorified, sin dwells in this body. No longer is sin my nature but to say I am without sin is a contradiction, I can sin if I do not abide in Christ. Here is the distinction as a believer; I am no longer a slave, I am an heir, a child of God. At that time not knowing God you were enslaved (douleuó, properly, to serve as a slave, having all personal ownership-rights assigned to the owner) to nature (phusis, properly, inner nature, the underlying constitution or make-up of someone). This is the freedom; you are a child of God, now you have a new inner nature, God sent forth his spirit in us, crying Abba Father! I know and am known by my heavenly Father. His people hear his voice and do his will. I worship Him in spirit and truth, in this I am free, Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
You Have My Surrender

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him,“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. The truth will set you free is misused often as many apply it to habitual sin; if they still live in habitual sin they can't be Christians right? the truth will set you free right? While it is generally true, through his spirit, abiding in him, and the renewal of our minds, we can overcome habitual sin. The context here is that we are no longer slaves to our sinful nature and no longer slaves to the elementary principles of the world. We are no longer slaves to sin. When we believed in Jesus we were sealed with his spirit, in such we cry Abba Father! He is my Father, I am his child, I am no longer a slave, I am a joint heir with Christ. His spirit is within me, my new identity is a child of God, this freedom is found in Christ.
I will be doing the works of the Father, if I am a child of the Father. Practicing or doing sin is defined by whether I am a slave to sinful nature. If a slave to sinful nature then a slave to sin and the practice of sin. Sin defines a lost person, they delight in sin in their inner being and as a lost person they can not distinguish sin from themselves as their nature is sin. But in Christ I am a new creation, I have a new nature, I delight in the laws of God in my inner being. But as Paul writes there are two laws in me, the law of sin and the law of the spirit. I obey one or the other. Jesus said, whoever is doing sin is a slave to sin. This word for doing is poieó, I practice, do, make. If I am a slave I do and make sin as it is my nature. Jesus also used this word when he said not everyone whose says to me Lord, Lord will enter heaven, but he who is doing the will of the Father. As children we know the will of the Father through his spirit which is our helper guiding and teaching us into all truth. A slave doesn't know the will of the father, but a son does... a son abides in the house forever, a slave does not, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
"The law of the spirit sets us free from sin.3 We must have God's spirit within us, we must be born again, not of flesh, but of the spirit. This is the defining principle of a believer. When we believe, we are sealed with his spirit, not only does this give us access to the power to overcome sin but it is a guarantee of our inheritance as sons.4 in which we cry Abba, Father! We have received Christ Jesus. I am to make as dead (nekroó, corpse-like, lifeless) my members (melos, a part belonging to the whole), to offer it as a living sacrifice, to not let it reign, because my life is something that has been bought from death to life, from sinful nature to spiritual.11 I am no longer a slave to sin, it is no longer my nature, my master, I have died to this nature and now Christ reigns within me. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace".QSo if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.6
