Has not the LORD anointed you to be prince over his people? And you shall reign over the people of the LORD and
you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this
shall be the sign to you that the LORD has anointed you to be prince
over his heritage.1
Saul had been anointed by God to be the leader of his people. The people had rejected God's rule and wanted a king to rule, like the other nations.2 Samuel the prophet would bring forth this message to Saul, he was chosen by God to be the King of his people and would save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. God would give them a sign of such. And there would be a sign to the people. Samuel commanded Saul to go home to his father and on the way he tells him what will happen, that this would be a sign to God's people that God had chosen Saul.
On the way, there will be three men going up to God at Bethel. They will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand. Bethel means House of El or House of God, it has significant importance, an altar to God was built there and the priests would go there.3 Only the priests were allowed to have of the sacrificial food of the altar, they gave two loaves of bread to Samuel.
On the way, there will be a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. Samuel tells Saul the Spirit of God will rush on him and he will be turned into another man, he will walk among the prophets, prophesying with them. Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you. And when Saul came to Gibeah, it happened as Samuel spoke, the Spirit of God came on him and he walked and prophesied with the prophets.
Saul's heart would not truly be after God, unlike David. As quickly as he is anointed King he is removed. But Saul continued to be King for 14 more years, we usually assign this to the stubbornness of Saul to not step down , and it is true but God uses him, you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. I believe God also used him to further refine David into a man worthy to be King of His people. A shepherd boy became a man, a warrior. Many leaders today are like Saul, their ministry is more about what they or the people want than what God wants. God wants leaders like David, men after his own heart. Not perfect men, but men who listen to him above the people, who do his will.
The people saw Saul among the prophets. The people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” And a man of the place answered, “And who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” And who is the father of the prophets? It is God, as the prophets receive direct authority from God, such is a tremendous responsibility. God anointed Saul to be king, and as a sign to the people Saul took and ate of the bread of God and walked among the prophets.
