When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.1
Under the new covenant with God we are sealed with his spirit, Here John calls it the Spirit of Truth, this fufills the prophecy that he writes his laws on our heart with this spirit. It would not be logical to say I want God to teach me in the spirit only, when I have before me the very words of God, who walked among us as a man and instructions that have been passed down to me in written form for thousands of years. Though I truly believe God good reveal this all over again it might be quicker just to read the scriptures and see how you can apply them in your life. It would also not be logical to say I have a knowledge of the word of God without the spirit of God giving revelation, teaching me its meaning and how to apply it.
The word of God is living and active. Herein lies its power. Jesus said to eat and drink him, bread of life and living water. his words were truth and spirit, eat word and drink spirit. Through this spirit that he gave us he said living water would flow out of us. Unfortunately we have this flesh that is restricting flow, so we must learn to open up the flood gates of living water. If we put our mind on the spirit we have life and peace, we speak living water, which gives life and peace, but if our minds are on the flesh we are under the law of sin and death. If we are under the law of sin and death then would not what we speak in the flesh be of of sin and death? The Bible warns of such a tongue.
The word of God transforms and renews our mind so that we have the mind of Christ, so we can live out this spirit in us, thus our mind acts as a regulator. It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.2
Jesus said, his words were spirit and he also said he is the truth and he is the word of God. If the word of God is truth and Jesus is the word of God then Jesus is truth. If the words of Jesus are spirit then the word of God is spirit. If the word of God is truth and the word of God is spirit then the word is truth and spirit. Take up the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. We worship God not just in word and not just in spirit but word and spirit. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.3 Truth and Spirit. Faith and Works. Grace and Instruction. We tend to always lean to one or the other.
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.4
