Core Values

the one peering into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and is persevering, this one is not becoming a forgetful hearer but a doer of work, this one will be happy in the doing (James 1:25).

At the core of who we are exist values, principles or standards of behavior, one's judgment of what is important in life. Character is defined as the action you do to carry out your values. We can develop values in things that are not valuable and it takes effort to change. For freedom we look into the perfect law of liberty, it was for freedom that Christ set us free.[1] When we see the truth we must be a doer who acts and perseveres. Doing is key and so is perseverance, God can renew our minds through instant healing but often chooses to transform. Transform means to make a thorough change in character, which means changing our values.[2] We know the truth through hearing the truth, but change occurs when we through perseverance do the truth, we live it out, this sets us free. Doing is powerful as it is more than just knowledge, it is an understanding, a why, a revelation that can be used to help others. When we value one thing over another and persistently live it out, it becomes our character. Jesus is the truth, when we value him, our character becomes his character as we value his principles.

Many people know what the words Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service, Honor, Integrity, and Courage mean, but how often do you see someone actually live up to them? Value is defined by the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. The above mentioned values are from the Seven Core Army Values. They define what the values of a soldier should be and what should be lived out on a daily basis, the character of a soldier. The ethos, or the fundamental and distinctive character, of the Army soldier is "I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade." Being a soldier is persevering in living out or operating to these values. The Army operates through a crawl, walk, run process; crawl is in the classroom receiving knowledge, walk is hands on, doing to apply and make a habit, and run is living it out. You have probably seen corporate values posted on the walls of where you work. This is common in the corporate world, as core values are indispensable for effective leadership, planning, execution, alignment, and accountability.[3] "It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are" -- Roy Disney.

Core values should be internal operating principles being lived out, not just a perception. Core values are the foundation we build everything else on. Do you know the core values of your ministry? Do you have core values as a believer? As core values in business are effective at leadership, planning, execution, alignment, and accountability so will they be in ministry and in your personal lives. But what do core values of a believer look like; "Finally, brothers, whatever is
  • true (real; genuine; authentic, factual, honest, trustworthy; constant, unwavering, faithful),
  • thoughtful (grave, serious, important; conscious of heavy responsibilities or cares),
  • just (honest, guided by truth, reason, justice, fairness: acting in principle; upright; equitable),
  • pure (free from blemishes; unadulterated, uncontaminated, undefiled, modest, virtuous),
  • gracious (pleasant, likable, accommodating, agreeable, amiable, compatible, harmonious),
  • honorable (renowned, distinguished, notable; having a widespread, esp good, reputation),
if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things...practice these things" (Philippians 4:8-9). Practice these things; being true, thoughtful, just, pure, gracious, and honorable, be a doer who lives it out.

Jesus speaks that we should value being; poor in spirit, mournful, meek, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, just, and those who persevere (Matthew 5). We should value; being salt and light, fulfilling the law, our heart, our identity, love, giving to the needy, prayer, fasting, devotion, faith, not judging, seeking and asking and knocking, others, and wisdom (Matthew 5-6). Grace, Hope, Faith, Love, Justice, Service, Joy, and Peace should be the distinctive character of a believer, in every aspect of our lives. "Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped," (Philippians 2:2-8).

The values that we live out, they are and are becoming our character, if we live out His values then our character is a reflection of Christ in us. Much like the law under the old covenant, in the new covenant we can not live these things out without him, our character must become his. His values being lived out in his body, the church, would be a testimony to the world that we are his disciples and that he is from God; others will believe our message and know that Jesus is from God (John 13:35;17:21-23).
