"You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness" (Romans 8:9-10).
Righteousness comes by the Spirit of Christ inside, the Spirit gives freedom and life. Our body, the flesh is still at enmity with God, dead because of sin, until we receive a glorified body. However the same Spirit, that raised Christ from the dead, is making our mortal bodies alive, as he has made his home in us, v.11.
"The Spirit is life because of righteousness",v.10. Because we are made righteous by his Spirit in us, we are no longer debtors to live by the flesh, v.11-12. Now we have been made free from the law of sin and death, v.2. Death no longer has a sting and our sin is no longer held against us. However, living by the flesh brings death to our mortal body, v.13. So how do we live with the Spirit inside? If by the Spirit, the practices of the body you are putting to death, you are living, v.13.
"For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace" (Romans 6:11-14). Do we put ourselves back under the law so that sin abounds, no! "For what the law was not able to do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, His own Son having sent in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, did condemn the sin in the flesh, that the righteousness of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit" (Romans 8:3-4).
Like orphans we have been adopted, we have received the Spirit of sonship, in which we are crying Abba Father, as our spirit testifies with his that we are his children, v.15-16, and if children, then heirs of God!
