"I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: justice was as a robe and a crown. I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy: and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth." (Job 29:12-17).
In Ephesians Paul speaks of putting on the armor of God, "put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (Ephesians 6:10). He tells us to put on the armor, v.11, and to stand having taken up the whole armor of God, v.13. We are to put on truth, salvation, and righteousness, all which are in Christ (John 17:17). To be readied by the gospel of peace, to take up a doubled edged sword (spirit and word) and at all times, in all circumstances, we are to pray and take up the shield of faith "with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one" (Ephesians 6:10-18).
"I put on righteousness as my clothing", v.12. We would not be prepared to fight a battle without putting on armor, neither we would put on armor without first clothing ourselves, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might". We are clothed in Christ's righteousness, "for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ" (Galatians 3:27) As God's people, "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians 3:12) Our adversary roams around seeking whom he may destroy (1 Peter 5:6-10), to avoid being devoured Peter says to stand firm in the faith and to "clothe yourselves with humility toward one another”,v.5. Clothing is necessary for battle.
To stand against the adversary we are to put on this new self in Christ, "created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24). We are to be strong in his power and might, to put on his clothing and armor. We are to be built up in Christ, firmly rooted, and established by the faith which he has authored and is perfecting in us (Colossians 2:7; Hebrews 12:2). Faith comes and is perfected in us by hearing, hearing comes by the word of God, which is Jesus (Romans 10:17, John 1:1,14). It is by being firm, or strong and unshaken-ed, in our faith that we resist the devil (1 Peter 5:9). By faith we have received him and by faith we follow him, into the battle he has created for us to join (Colossians 2:6; Ephesians 2:8-10).
Oh if we had a heart for those who are crying out; the orphans, the dying, those afflicted and being devoured. Oh if we had the courage to pluck them from the teeth of the adversary. To fight we must deny ourselves and take up our cross, we must put on the clothing and armor that Christ gives us, walking in his power, strength, and might. Clothe yourselves, there is a battle to join, he has given you all you need, becoming flesh to dwell among us, He humbled himself even to the point of death, to give us righteousness as clothes and to be an example for us to follow, "come follow me" he says, into victory."
"Blessed be Jehovah, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and in whom I take refuge" (Psalm 144:1-2).
