Things Eternal

"You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord" (Deuteronomy 8:2-3).

This is a lesson for us today, when we become comfortable we tend to forget what God has done for us and how the word of God satisfies our soul. "When you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery", v.12-14. May we put behind those things not eternal and reach for those that are, (Philippians 3:13-14), may we like new born infants crave pure spiritual milk, that we might know the full experience of salvation (1 Peter 2:2).

Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess" (Deuteronomy 9:6). For forty days and forty nights Moses fasted, he then receives the ten commandments from God only to be told the people are worshiping a golden calf and God wants to destroy them, "So, I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. Then I lay prostrate before the Lord as before, forty days and forty nights" (Deuteronomy 9:6). May we fall in love with God's people as Moses did, a heart that would fast 80 days and nights for His people.

God is bringing us into a "good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey", v.7-8. Good things await those whose faith is in the Lord, they shall prosper and nothing shall stand against them, "neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:39).

"But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day" (Deuteronomy 8:18).
