The phrase "fight the good fight of faith" from 1 Timothy 6:12 calls believers to perseverance, trust, and unwavering faith in God. However, at the core of this battle is the truth that Christ reigns supreme—above all, in all, and over all things. We understand it his empowerment and His sovereignty at work in fighting the good fight.
Christ Above All Things
Christ’s authority and supremacy are clearly emphasized in Colossians 1:16-17:"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist."
This passage reveals that Christ is the architect and sustainer of everything—He holds creation together. In the fight of faith, believers must recognize His dominion, knowing that nothing happens outside His control. Trials, suffering, and spiritual battles all unfold under His watchful eye. He is with us through it all, giving us a spirit wisdom and revelation in knowing him, whether the fellowship is in his sufferings or his life, he is above all, in all, and over all.
Christ In All Things
Paul emphasizes that Christ dwells within believers in Galatians 2:20:
"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
This truth changes the perspective on spiritual warfare—Christ’s presence within His followers means they never fight alone. His grace, strength, wisdom, and righteousness empower believers to stand firm. In moments of weakness, they can rely on His sufficiency rather than their own.
Christ Over All Things
In Philippians 2:9-11, Paul proclaims Christ’s ultimate authority:
"Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
No earthly power, hardship, or enemy can overshadow His rule. As believers fight the good fight, they do so knowing that victory is already secured through Christ’s triumph over sin and death. We are deeply rooted in faith and love so we have strength to lay hold of a powerful love that will not separate us from God and be filled to the fullness of God. Putting off the old garments and putting on the new we can equip ourselves with the armor of God.
The Armor of God: Clothed in Christ
Believers are called to put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-17)—but before that, we are called to be clothed in Christ Himself. Romans 13:14 says: "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts." Think of putting on the armor of God, you need to first be clothed in new cleansed garments in Christ.
With Christ above, in, and over all, faith is not a desperate struggle—it is a confident stand in the victory already won by Him. The good fight of faith is not about striving in human effort but being empowered in him, working out what he has already accomplished and given to us, through the power in our inner being birth of the Spirit.
Conclusion
To fight the good fight of faith is to walk in Christ’s victory, stand in His truth, and live in His presence. Knowing He reigns above all things, dwells within us, and governs over every situation, believers find the strength to endure and thrive in faith. With eyes fixed on Him, faith sees things not seen and makes effective that which is, the victory that is already won.
