So Mephibosheth ate at David's table, like one of the king's sons (2 Samuel 9:11)
Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan and Jonathan was the son of Saul. Jonathan and David loved one another deeply (2 Samuel 1:17-27). He even paid homage to Saul who had tried to kill him. In 2 Samuel 9 David looks for those left of the household of Saul so that he can show compassion to them (2 Samuel 9:1). He is told of Mephibosheth and sends for him and invites him to sit at the king's table forever. So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet (2 Samuel 9:13)
Mephibosheth was crippled (broken) but he was invited to sit at the king's table. It is a picture of God's grace, we are chosen to come to the table. It is what God is telling us, we have a place at his table, even in our brokenness.
Jesus told a parable about a lord inviting friends to his banquets but they made excuses so he sent his servants into the streets and alleys of the city to bring in the poor and the crippled and the blind and the lame, and they went into to the highway and byways to invite more to sit at his table (Luke 14: 16-24).
Jesus said if we do things for earthly rewards that will be our reward. If we were to have a banquet and invite people who will invite us back then that is our reward. But if we invite the cripple, the poor, lame, and blind who have nothing to give then we will be blessed for we will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous (Luke 14: 12-15).
God's will is that his house be filled and he shows no favoritism. For this is the kingdom of God; all are invited to come to the table. You do not have to clean up to come to the table. If God invites you to sit at the table you belong. If you are still crippled, lame, blind, and poor it doesn't mean you don't belong there. Mephibosheth sat at the table of King David lame feet and all.
It was an amazing thing when I believed, God said to me "You are home." He reminded me many times afterward, in my brokenness when I felt like I did not belong. I was home even though he did not heal all my brokenness. When we begin to see God is for us, that we are totally accepted and loved we begin to believe we belong. And when we begin to believe we belong we begin to act like we belong. So come, you are invited to the table, you belong.
