And this is the will of the one sending me, that all who he gives me I will lose none but raise them up in the last day - John 6:39
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit... -John 15:16
We know when Jesus says this he is refering to the eleven disciples, that he would lose none, except the one who was destined for such, so that the scriptures might be fulfiled (John 13:11; John 17:12). But he also prays "I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one.." John 1 7:20-21). To me, this makes this amazing scripture, that all believers are inclusive of this truth. Which speaks of several things, one of being chosen, of an election, "all that the Father gives me will come and the one coming to me I will never turn away" (John 6:37). It also speaks that no one can come to Father but through him, he is the only way, he is the gate (John 10:7; John 10: 9-10; John 10:7, 9-10). This is the will of God, "all who he gives me I will lose none but raise them up in the last day." It is experiential knowledge, of knowing him as the word of life, and that he chose us and will never forsake us.
for this is the will of the Father that all who looks to the Son and believes in him has eternal life and I will raise him in the last day - John 6:40
He will lose none that the father gives him. Election doesn't neglect the need to evangelize, those given to Jesus by the Father must hear the gospel to believe. Paul writes, when we hear the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation, and believe we are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). We are made new, sealed as his own, the Spirit being the pledge of the redemption of his own. We are predestined for adoption through the Spirit, who cries out within us Abba Father and testifies we are his children (Romans 8:15, Ephesians 1:5).
all who look to the Son...
The word "look to" means to "look at, gaze, behold; I see, experience, discern; I partake of." Believing is something that is experiential, not just some intellectual knowledge or some act we perform. We look to Jesus because he is the author and perfector of our faith. The Spirit testifies we are children. We must be born into the kingdom of God. This leads us to what Jesus said next in relation to "I will raise him up in the last day."
No one can come to me if not of the Father, the one sending me, and I will raise him in the last day - John 6:44
Jesus said to the people he was living bread that came down from heaven and if they ate of this bread they would have eternal life. "It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh is useless, the words I have spoken to you exist Spirit and life" (John 6:63). John writes Jesus knew from the beginning those who would not believe for he said "for this reason I said no one has the power to come to me if not existing given to him from the Father" (John 6:64-65). Jesus is the gate, "my sheep listen to my voice and I know them and they follow me and I give them eternal life, and not one perishes and no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father who gives them to me exists greater than all and no one has the power to snatch from my Father's hand. I and the Father are one." (John 10:27-30).
God chose us, to bear fruit. If he chose us and we do not bear fruit it doesn't glorify him. And if he were to give up on us what does that say in regards to predestination being through foreknowledge? And would it not make him look weak? I take that the Father is greater than all, to be inclusive of myself. Do I have the free will to jump out of his hands? Where do I fall if I am of the elect? Do not the scriptures say it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of a living God? Though a terrible thing, if I jump out I fall right back into his hands.
the one partaking of my flesh and drinking my blood has eternal life, I also raise him the last day. For my flesh is real food, my blood is real drink - John 6:54-56
It is real food, real drink, but must be spiritually (granted by the Spirit) discerned and eaten. The word of God who became flesh, his words are from the Father, living bread coming down from heaven that gives life. John writes he is the Word of Life, whom they proclaim, eternal life, who came as light into the world in which he created, and whose life is the light of men (1 John 1:1-5). His words are Spirit and they are Life, real food, and drink that gives eternal life. As Peter confessed, "your words exist eternal life" (John 6:68-69). May we come to know the true meaning of sowing and reaping, what it means to feed on living bread and water to receive in abundance the substance of life. Just like the body needs food for life, the soul, spirit needs food. His words exist real food, Spirit, and life.
.... I will raise him in the last day - John 6:39; John 6:40; John 6:44; John 6:54
All looking to the Son and believing in him will have eternal life. The one partaking of His flesh and blood will have eternal life. It is the Spirit that gives life and the words of Jesus exist Spirit and Life. He is the word, living bread that came down from the father. No one can come to Jesus unless it is of the Father, who draws or grants one to come to Jesus. All who the Father gives to him Jesus will lose none.
