Growing Strong in God's Might

theho wordlogos of theho Lordkyrios causes to growauxanō andkai strengthensischuō according tokata mightkratos - Acts 19:20

Did the word of the Lord grow strong or did the word of the Lord cause the church to grow strong and be strengthened in God's might? I would say the later as the word of the Lord is strong. "So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it" (Isaiah 55:11). It is the word of God that causes us to grow and strengthens us according to His might.

My Father is glorified in this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples - John 15:8

In the new testament John writes Jesus is the word of God and his words are living bread and life (John 1:1-2; John 6:51, 68). Jesus said he is the Vine, all who abide in him will bear fruit and apart from him we can do nothing (John 15:5). Bearing fruit implies maturity and growing strong. The way to grow strong and bear fruit is through the word of God. Think of growth as a plant would grow, this Jesus explains to us. First the seed is planted then it grows roots downward into good soil, then it will sprout up enduring the thorns to maturity, bearing fruit. A mature plant bears fruit, so it is with the Christian life. God is glorified in that we grow up to bear fruit.

finally grow strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength - Ephesians 6:10

Once we have a proper foundation, expressed in the preceding chapters of Ephesians, we grow up strong in the Lord, "in the might of his strength." How do we do this? The word of the Lord causes us to grow strong and strengthens us according to His might (Acts 19:20). Emphasis is put on growth in the word which strengthens us according to his might.

finally be empowered in the Lord and in the might of his strength - Ephesians 6:10

There are authorities, rulers, forces of darkness, spiritual forces at work in this world, Paul writes we must grow strong in the Lord in order to fight their schemes, so that we can rule and have dominion over them in the might of his strength. Think of the word might, we use it in a sentence like, "he tried with all his might." Meaning he put all his heart, strength, life and understanding into doing something. Possibly, we are reminded of another scripture when we think of might, which we can express as love God with all your might (Luke 10:27).

I have all strength in the one empowering me - Philippians 4:13

"I continue to thank the one empowering me, Christ Jesus our Lord because he lead the way of my faith appointing me unto service" (1Timothy 1:12). Christ leads the way, the champion, pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Because Christ led the way and lays hold of us we in all our might run to lay hold of the prize, Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12). "Now, the Lord stood by me and empowered me... and I was rescued from the mouth of the lion" (2 Timothy 4:17).

Paul writes we are to be "empowered in the Lord and in the might of his strength." There is doing something in our own might and strength, like, I can put much effort into lifting weights to become strong. Then there is growing strong in the might of his strength. Often the blurred area is the what is my part, what must I do? "The word of the Lord causes to grow strong and strengthens according to His might." This tells us what we must do to grow strong, to overcome; abide in His words. John affirms this (1 John 2:12-14). It is not my effort, putting in my quite time, reading the scriptures, etc... it is what I get from it that strengthens me, the might of His strength. Let us put our "our might" into abiding in the word of the Lord, feasting on living bread, and overcoming (no matter what comes our way) growing strong in the strength of His might.
