... and boast in our suffering to the extent, the hope of the glory of God. Now, not alone rather also we boast in our sufferings knowing that suffering works out endurance and endurance proving, and proving hope. Now hope doesn't disappoint because the love of God is poured out into our hearts... (Romans 5:1-5)
How in the world can you rejoice in some of life's circumstances? The word boast is often translated as rejoice, because the reason we can boast is a cause to rejoice. There is a proving going on in suffering or affliction and if we have the work of endurance it produces hope and hope produces love. We can boast in that we are making sure of our calling, we are patiently enduring the suffering, placing our trust and hope in God. What is worked out in the suffering is hope and the love of God poured out into our hearts. Love is poured out as God predestined us to be conformed to the image of Christ and is working out all things for our good, this is the hope of the glory of God.
"... and boast in our suffering to the extent, the hope of the glory of God..."
We are justified from faith having peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom we have access by faith to the extent of this grace in which we stand (Romans 5:1-2). And here's why we can boast, "the hope of the glory of God." Boast means to glory, boast, Rom. 2:17, 23; ὑπέρ τινος, to boast of a person or thing, to undertake a complimentary testimony to, 2 Cor. 12:5; to rejoice, exult. The boasting is a testimony of being "proved" worthy to be called a son of God. Paul writes he can boast in his weakness. The point of it is we are rejoicing in hope because there's some evidence of it because faith exists substance and evidence of things not seen, including hope. This is why we can hope against hope of the circumstances of this life. Hope is evidence case you are sharing in the glory of God to the extent of the hope of the glory of God, which means God through faith is giving you hope as you endure through the suffering. We know as James writes endurance has an intended work to produce or work out maturity and maturity is wholeness, lacking in nothing.
To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, ESV)
So here's the trial, the testing, the proving, and the parable of soils says the word is received with joy but then the cares and anxieties of this world, the deceit of riches, persecution come. Affliction and suffering come like a thorn choking out the plant. Each type of soil I believe is a continual process except maybe for the one that is unto salvation but even then we can say it is salvation of our soul distinguished from being adopted of the spirit, being born of the Spirit. We can even say that the devil can snatch away the word of God in believers so it doesn't take root in our hearts? So what is the point in needing to endure, why God must we go through this, take it away instantly overnight deliver me... The scriptures speak of the need for endurance in the Christian life. Paul compared it to an athlete running a race, he needs endurance to finish. Oh, the hard work to get there but when he reaches his stride, the hope, excitement, rejoicing fills his soul. We have Christ dwelling in our hearts through faith, and the Holy Spirit to fill us with agape love.
"Now, not alone rather also we boast in our sufferings knowing that suffering works out endurance and endurance proving, and proving hope."
The suffering works out endurance and endurance, proving, which is also translated as a character or the trial brings on proving or testing of the genuineness of our faith, a proving by fire Peter called it. It hurts right? there is something going on, there's a trial. Maybe it is some injustice done to, you want to seek justice, maybe it's stress and anxiety, like Jesus bleeding bloody sweat drops as he was in such agony. That's why he is a great high priest who can sympathize with our weakness because he experienced it.

Suffering doesn't feel good. If we endure which is also sometimes said to patiently endure, if we have patience, it will produce hope and hope does not disappoint because the love of God will be poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. So when you endure there's hope and God gives you love through the spirit because he's encouraging you to endure. This is the faith of Abraham who hoped against the circumstances of this earthly life. God promised a son through to Sarah but he had doubt and tried to bring it about by having a son through Hagar but he did not judge according to his unbelief but was strengthened in faith until he was fully convinced of God's word and promises. How can we be strengthened in faith during the suffering? God's word and promises. The gospel was preached to Abraham beforehand, but we have the written word, the new testament proclaiming to us the light of the gospel of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Fully convincing faith, that is the purpose of enduring the trial, so that our faith matures in a certain area, becoming full-grown through the suffering, the affliction. It's working out endurance and that patience is proving our faith. When we endure the proving we are filled with hope and love because we're becoming like Him, being conformed to the image of Christ. We're making sure of our calling in Christ, as it for us to overcome, the ones that are children of God, born of God. To endure, to not be choked out by the weeds of this life. This is why Paul says work out your calling and work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Because if you don't overcome, maybe you are not called, maybe you're not a child of God because the scriptures say those he chose he predestined, adopted and those he predestined, he called and those he called he justified and those he justified he glorifies. Here is where hope is glorious and why we can boast and rejoice in the suffering because it is proving, testing, a trial that we are enduring as children of God.

If you've been called or adopted, predestined, chosen, God is working out all things according to your good, so to be conformed to the image of Christ. What is this earthly life in comparison to the weight of such glory? The proving produces character but it's producing endurance and its intended work is maturity, to be like Jesus. And when we endure God gives us hope and tells us he loves us because we are becoming like Him. It is encouragement, even that God disciplines those he loves so that we share in his Holiness. Yes, I can be encouraged because I am a child of God but press on, be strengthened in faith during the suffering so to allow the work of endurance. Then I can boast and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, I have hope of his glory and God's love is poured out into my heart.
