Grace: A Gift From Jesus

But to each one of us grace is given, that according to the measure of the gift of Christ.*

Grace is given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Grace is a gift, that comes through Jesus, "through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand."Romans 5:2 Through whom? Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, we have access to grace and stand in it. Grace is a gift received by faith along with righteousness, to "those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ."Romans 5:17 Grace is a free gift from God not like the transgression whereby many died through one, but through one did the grace of God come and the gift that came by the grace which overflows to many.Romans 5:15

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.John 1:17

In Christ, by grace through faith we are saved, there is no condemnation. One truth we see about grace is that we are not under judgment and condemnation of the Law, "and existing dead in our trespasses and the uncircumcision of our flesh, you were made alive with Christ, he forgave all our transgressions, blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us. He took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross;"* So we see Jesus, the Word of God, who became flesh, who was the glory of the Son from the Father, came in fullness of grace and truth.John 1:14 "Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you investigated diligently and examined with care,"1 Peter 1:10 This leads us to this truth, the gift of grace releases us from the judgment and condemnation of the Law, "for those in Christ there is no condemnation."*

You have cut yourself off from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.Galatians 5:4

We fall from grace when we try to find justification by works of the Law. Justification is the means by which we acquire the gift of righteousness, it is by grace through redemption and through his blood, these we receive through faith from the rich benefits of his grace.* God shows His manner of love by sending his Son, not to condemn the world but to save it, for those who believe in him will not perish, but those who believe not are condemned already.* Jesus came full of grace and truth and those who receive Him receive grace and are not under condemnation.

For the grace of God has been revealed to all men, teaching us to deny ungodliness and worldly passions...*

Jesus coming full of grace and truth has manifested, revealed grace to all men but Grace is a gift received. We see that receiving grace is equivalent to receiving Him.* Therefore the gift of grace is received by faith. By grace through faith (it is God's gift which we can not work to earn) you are saved, and thereby we escape His wrath and condemnation.Ephesians 2:8-9 This reinforces previous scripture that God's grace is a gift received in Christ, and that we have access to grace by faith. For those professing faith in Christ, he is our high priest by whom we have boldness to approach God's throne of grace and mercy.* Because God loves, we in Christ receive from the riches of heaven. "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved."*

to the praise of his glorious grace with which he has highly favored us in the Beloved.Ephesians 1:6

Grace is often defined as unmerited, undeserved favor. Certainly receiving this glorious grace, favor we give God praise. This grace, being highly favored comes through the Beloved, his Son. Paul tells us from the riches of His grace and glory we have been favored and blessed with adoption, redemption, the forgiveness of sin. And he goes on to write this occurred when we believed, upon hearing the word of truth the gospel of our salvation.* And more so this ties into what God had purposed in Christ, before the foundation of the world, that he would have a people of His own, like him in holy character, to love and to be in his presence. This is the promise the old testament speaks of, one of inheritance, and in the new covenant the Holy Spirit we received, which came through the blessing of adoption from the riches of his grace, is a pledge of this promise of inheritance.

who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time eternal,
2 Timothy 1:9

He saved us according to His purpose and grace and called us to a holy calling. In Christ we have obtained an inheritance predestined according to His purpose, who accomplishes all according to the council of His will.* This is what he purposed in Christ, to save us, even before creation of the world he purposed to have a people of his own, holy in His presense, loved by Him, it is why we are called to holiness, not by works but by His purpose and grace, and by his power.

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy. "*

To the praise of his glorious grace, we receive the gift of grace in Christ! True grace is about glorification. To those he chose he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, to those called, justified, also glorified.* Those born of God will overcome the world, will not continue sinning, and will grow up to bear fruit of God's holy character, being instruments of  righteousness.* As we stand in grace we are becoming like him in glory, partakers of His divine nature, sharing in his holy character, transformed into the image of His Son. His grace is sufficient in this, as it is His power perfecting, bringing about glorification.

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.Ephesians 4:7

As believers we are given grace, we stand in grace which we have access to, through Jesus, of faith.* Otherwise, unbelievers are not under God's grace and are under condemnation, though He is still kind to them, and longsuffering wishing that none should perish but all come to repentance.* I have heard grace explained as being both a "common grace" given to all men and a "saving grace" given to believers. We have seen from scripture grace is available to all men, but it is received through faith therefore given as a gift to believers. It is God's kindness (chrÄ“stotÄ“s) and forbearance and longsuffering that leads men to repentance.* These attributes of God are towards unbelievers but can we call these "common grace" or do we confuse these with the favor, the grace (charis) he gives to believers?

Christ was a propitiation not just for our sin but for all men, thus God is not angry and wrathful, but kind, the sun shines and the rain falls on all men. Undeserving men prosper in this earthly life. God is longsuffering so that all come to repentance. But there will be a day of God's wrath. Think about the great white throne of judgment for unbelievers, will God give them favor, grace? will he have mercy? No. This brings up the question; how can a loving God condemn people to hell? God exists love and He exists Holy, these are inseparable attributes of His character. God purposed in Christ, before creation, a way for us to be holy and loved, blameless in his presence.* A way to explain this judgement and condemnation is that God is holy and for those who have not believed, who have not received the gift of grace and righteousness, who are not hidden in Christ's righteousness these do not escape His judgement, nor his wrath which upon the day of judgement is poured out upon unrighteousness which he hates. The good news is the gospel of our salvation, by grace through faith you are saved... through Jesus we escape wrath, judgment and condemnation, we have peace before God, and we have access to grace in which we stand, a glorious gift from Jesus.
