To Know Christ

to prepare the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until all attain to the unity of the faith and of knowledge of the Son of God, to mature adulthood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,*

The gifts (apostleship, prophecy, teaching, evangelism, pastoring) are given to prepare the saints, those who are mature, for the work of ministry. Prepare is καταρτισμός (katartismos) to get ready, prepare or preparation, training, equipping. This preparation builds up the church, the body, unto maturity so that it is no longer children tossed to and fro in deceitful doctrines. The body grows up into the full measure of the image of Christ, "truth in love growing up in Him." The purpose of ministry is to grow up the body, and this growing up is in knowledge of the Son. For this purpose all other things become as refuse, in order to know Christ.

so that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, gives you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in knowledge of him.*

The word knowledge is epignōseōs (ἐπιγνώσεως) meaning knowledge, understanding, insight; the act of coming at the knowledge. So we see the concept of knowing Jesus is about becoming, coming to know Him, which speaks of growth. "His divine power freely given us all that for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him the one calling us, His own glory and excellence."* We are given everything in Christ, he is the alpha and omega, "in whom exist hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments."* The church of Galatia severed themselves from knowledge in Jesus, going back to the Old covenant. Peter writes about such people, they go out from among us, forsaking Jesus, led astray by their greedy desires.* But for us we seek the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Christ. We are given all things but we must abide in Him, growing up in knowledge of him.

walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God.*

How can I walk worthy of the Lord, which implies doing the will of God? bear fruit, growing in knowledge of Him.* Here is how a church severs itself from Christ, for things that do not grow it up in knowledge of God. How do we come to knowledge of God? "so that their hearts persuaded and come together in love and unto all riches of firm persuasion of understanding to the extent, knowledge of God's mystery, the one Christ."* This mystery was hidden in God in the beginning and through the church the manifold wisdom of God is being made known to the principles, authorities in the spiritual realm according to the eternal purpose that done in Christ Jesus our Lord.* The Father has appointed Christ for this purpose, so to grow in knowledge of the Son is to grow in knowledge of God.

in order that the fellowship of our faith becomes energized in knowledge, all good, that in us, to the extent Christ.*

What good is in me but Christ? Paul writes of what counts, like being a new creation, faith energized in love, and growing up into maturity, which produces obedience.* We grow up in knowledge of the Son, his words exist truth which increases faith in which is our victory, therefore we grow up, increase in faith, through knowledge of the Son. This is the purpose of true grace, that faith increases in measure. And this is the purpose of God's love, that we be perfected, become mature in Christ. Thus we know God's love is fulfilled when we keep His words as it produces maturity.* Peter writes, "may grace and peace increase in measure in knowledge of God and Jesus Christ our Lord."*

For you come into existence possessing these qualities and increasing in measure, not ineffective in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.*

I have faith because I know Jesus, who is the author and perfecter of faith. I add to my faith other things through knowledge of Jesus, in whom is all wisdom and understanding. This implies growth, all things are freely given in Christ, but I must grow up, mature, looking intently into truth, not a hearer only but effective, increasing in knowledge of Him. If I possess these qualities, I am effectively increasing in measure which comes through knowing Jesus. In knowledge of Christ I have faith and increase adding virtue, knowledge, in mastery (from en, "in the sphere of" and krátos, "dominion, mastery"), in endurance, in godliness, in brotherly love, and in agape love.* We see in this the process of growth, we "come into existence possessing these qualities and increase in measure" or deeply rooted in faith and love, we also grow up in knowledge of Him, truth in love.*

so that no longer existing children, tossed to and fro, carried about all winds of doctrine in human cunning in craftiness, by deceitful scheming. Now, truth in love, grow up all into Him who exists the head, Christ.*

The devil plants weeds among the children and introduces doctrines into the church, of deceit and crafty scheming so they will not grow up. The word carried about is the negative of φέρω which means to carry, to bring forth. The devil doesn't want them to bring forth fruit, to grow up, so he exalts them before they are deeply rooted and he keeps them tossed to and fro in crafty doctrines. Now, truth in love, we grow up into Him."All the ones born of God, overcomes the world and this is the victory the one conquering the world, that our faith."* We escape the entanglement through knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.*

if knowing He exists righteous also know that all the ones yielding righteousness, born of Him.*

There is a growth process where the plants grow up to bear fruit; from child, young person, and mature. One of the most important characteristics of knowing Jesus is growth, yielding righteousness. There are people who are taught and learned but never able to come to knowledge of the truth.* They bear witness having a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge in Jesus. The ones growing up, "put on the new man, the one renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator."* Knowledge in Jesus produces an approved mind, in which there is a proving of faith which produces maturity in knowledge of Jesus. The child born from above, God's seed abides in him, he will grow to yield fruit.* True knowledge in Jesus causes growth so to bear fruit of righteousness.*

but I consider all existing loss through the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, through whom all also considering as refuse so to gain Christ and be found in Him...*

Paul counts all things as loss in order to know Christ. All things that are not beneficial to this goal Paul puts aside, they are refuse, dung. Like the dogs and evil workers, trying to attain a righteousness through the Law, through offerings and tithing under the Law that did not perfect. The goal of running this race is to become like Him and growing up is through knowledge of Him, "that I may know Him..."*  So I count all as dung so that I may know Jesus... not that I have laid hold of it completely, but because Christ has made me his own, I press on forgetting that behind and reaching out to that before, toward the goal, for the prize of the high call of God in Christ Jesus. Those who are mature take this point of view.* To know Christ.
