Now then Christ suffered fleshly, you arm yourself in the same purpose, that the one suffering in the flesh, finished with sin, to the extent no longer living the remaining days in the flesh, in human desires but the will of God.*
Do you know we are called to glory? And that glory is becoming like Jesus? "Now we all unveiled faces beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, transformed the same image from glory to glory..."* We are called to glory, to grow up in knowledge of the Son, to become holy as He exists holy. We are to be a holy priesthood, a people of His own possession, which doesn't mean we are like slaves to Him but that we are children of His household. If we are called to heaven in which no unclean exist then we are called to holiness and to glory. This glory is being revealed in us, here on earth. We are called to glory and the path to glory is the example we have in Christ, who suffered in the flesh.
for I consider that the suffering of the present time is not of equal value by the side of the glory intended to be revealed in us.*
Did you you know we are called to suffering? "For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps."* There is a reason for the suffering, it is glory "intended to be revealed in us."* The word for intended speaks of purpose; to be destined to do, by the will other than man, to denote a foregone conclusion, this is likely to happen. It is often translated as if something that will happen like when we get to heaven where the glory exists. Surely the goal will be accomplished in a glorified body, like that of Jesus, but glory is intended to be revealed through Jesus, here on earth. In other words we are being transformed from glory to glory, transformed into the same image of Jesus from glory to glory. Such mystery I like talking about, it is profound and amazing. We see that we are called to glory and that the glory is being revealed in us through the face of Christ and that this glory is that we share in his image.
Stand out against him, steadfast in faith, knowing the same suffering is endured by believers in the world. Now the God of all grace, the one calling you into His eternal glory in Christ, after suffering a little will himself confirm, establish, strengthen, and establish. To him be power for all time.*
What is the purpose of suffering? Peter writes the devil is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. We are to resist him steadfast in faith "knowing that the same suffering endured of believers in the world." This states we are suffering because of the devil who is using people, seeking to destroy us through the persecution. The word for persecution means properly, aggressively chase, like a hunter pursuing a catch. They look for reason to attack you, to revile you, so that you will flee. Our battle is not against flesh and blood, so we do not attack nor revile back when reviled but we need to have the right weapons for this spiritual battle. "therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be vigilant, hoping completely to the extent of the grace brought to you in revelation of Jesus Christ"* All believers in the world suffer and I am called to suffer, "to this you have been called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving an example for you so that you follow in His footsteps."* Paul writes, "now, all those willing to live lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.* Jesus said, "blessed are the ones persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."* Jesus said there is a blessing in the suffering or there is a purpose in the suffering. True blessings are not of earthly things seen. In this verse we see the blessing is He will confirm, establish, strengthen, and establish us in the suffering.
Beloved, do not be surprised if a trial by fire comes among you, like as a something strange happening to you, rather rejoice insofar sharing in the sufferings of Christ so that when His glory is revealed you also may be glad.*
The Glory of God is being revealed in us here on earth, and this glory is revealed through sharing in the suffering of Christ. Suffering is the trial by fire, in which James aloso writes, it is a proving, a rite of passage into adulthood, thus suffering is leading to maturity. God uses the suffering to confirm, establish, strengthen us. The teachings of baptism teach us that there is a process of consecration that renders sin powerless.* I believe this is the testimony of water, of the purification of the body of sin. Peter writes we are obtaining the goal of our faith, the salvation of our soul and baptism now saves us, not the removal of dirt from the body but the profession of a good conscious to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ."* If I am a child of God and live in sin I do not have a good conscious toward God, in fact I am in a wretched state of doing the very things against my new nature in Christ and overpowered by forces of this earth. The issue is I am spiritual living in a body in which sin dwells and evil is near. The solution is transformation into the image of Christ so I have the mind of Christ, that accepts God's will. Transformation occurs through the Word of God, who is Jesus, the truth. Now, there is word given to men inspired by God then there is the Word of God who became flesh, living bread from heaven given to man.
Also for their sake I consecrate myself, so that they also be consecrated in truth.*
Jesus consecrated Himself in truth, he is our example. He endured suffering. "like as insulted, not insulting back, suffering, he did not threaten, now, entrusting himself to the one judging justly."* In the words of Jesus which exist truth we have revelation into the things of God that are spiritual, thus it is said we grow up in knowledge of the Son. This growing up in Christ produces fruit of righteousness. The Spirit is Life through righteousness as the Spirit teaches us to abide in Him, the Word of Life, so that consecration brings about holiness and thid brings life. There is a growth process for holiness and we see the fruit, of life, wholeness is an outcome of maturity. Obedience is an outcome of maturity, in which transformation renews the mind to prove the will of God as acceptable. To this we have been set a part, consecrated, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Christ, were grace and peace increases in measure.* So the service of grace were God's power is perfecting us in weakness so that we are being consecrated, set apart, holy. Thus the presenting of the body a living sacrifice for this purpose is the sacrifice acceptable to God as it produces a mind like Christ that "proves" or is proven, one that accepts the will of God as good. A Christian is to be Christ like so without maturity we do not reflect His image neither or we truly obedient even if we do many works in His name.
Jesus bore our sin in His body on a tree so that we die to sin living to righteousness, like as whose wounds heal.*
In the context of suffering Peter makes this remarkable statement. If Jesus is an example and we are called to suffer, then this implies there is healing in participating in His suffering. To participate in His suffering Paul writes is to know Him, the power of His resurrection, having fellowship in His sufferings having been conformed to His death so to participate in His life.* Now, the same language James uses, that the outcome of the trial, the proving is maturity which is wholeness, lacking in nothing.* In Him transformation is consecration in truth. Consecration is the purpose of setting a part a people that share in His image, character, therefore in true grace the power of God leads us into consecration. In the suffering is the proving of our faith, we hear the truth and look into the truth, as a mirror, but have we changed? The proving tests the genuineness of our faith and when we endure we come out mature. The devil uses the weeds to choke out the growth, he brings about persecution to get us to deny Christ and flee following Him. The pain of suffering is most evident, it is real, but Peter gives us understanding in why we suffer. We see that a participation in His death or suffering, has a purpose that sin is rendered powerless in the flesh.* "in the flesh, finished with sin, to the extent no longer living the remaining days in the flesh, in human desires but the will of God."* And "if the Spirit puts to death the deeds of the flesh, living.* So again we see the Spirit is Life through righteousness.
Rather rejoice insofar share in the sufferings of Christ, so in that His glory revealed also rejoice and be glad. If you are insulted in the name of Christ, blessed, because of Glory, also the Spirit of God abides to the extent of you.*
We are called to glory, to be like Jesus. All who follow Christ will suffer for this purpose. There is a purpose in the suffering, and a blessing, that we share in His glory which is to share in his character. This is true grace Peter writes. I am called to a purpose, my destiny is heaven, and I am to make sure of my calling, as to fall back, to give up is to be as the lost.* But when I endure I become mature, revealed in Glory. Suffering brings about the glory of God. The glory of God is unveiled in the face of Jesus Christ, a glory which we are being transformed into, His image. "For our transient light trial is producing in us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, as we look, not looking to that seen but the unseen, for what can be seen is temporary, but that not seen is eternal."* The purpose of suffering is the glory of God is being revealed in us. So we set our eyes on Jesus, not on things of this earth, things seen but on Him who endured a cross disregarding that seen, the shame. Consider Him who endured from sinners opposition against himself, so that not growing weary in your souls, losing heart.* In the suffering we entrust our souls to a faithful creator.* More precious than anything this world has to offer, great beauty in the eyes of God, is a heart consecrated to Him for glory which happens in the suffering. So for a short time we are made sorrowful in trials so that the proving of our faith by fire produces in us an eternal weight of Glory. To this you were chosen, to this you are called, to Glory.
Do you know we are called to glory? And that glory is becoming like Jesus? "Now we all unveiled faces beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, transformed the same image from glory to glory..."* We are called to glory, to grow up in knowledge of the Son, to become holy as He exists holy. just as the one calling you is holy, also become you, become holy in all behavior, for it is written exist holy because I exist holy.*
If we are children of God then He disciplines us as His own possession, of His household, so that we share in His holy character.* Holiness is sharing in His character and we see it is achieved through transformation. The outcome of the suffering in which we consecrate our hearts Christ Lord is called perfection, and maturity, godliness, holiness. Think about it, if I am adopted as a son, chosen to inherit the kingdom of God and there is no unholy thing in this kingdom then I am also called to holiness.
