And this we write so that our joy exists complete.*
The word complete means to fill, make full, fill up. John is writing these things so that we may be filled up with joy. How is this possible? well, we see what John is proclaiming to us is what they saw, heard, and touched; the Word of Life, the Eternal Life. "Proclaiming also to you so that you also have fellowship with the Father and with his son Jesus Christ, these things we are writing that your joy may be full."* Fellowship with the Son brings fellowship with the Father, a cleansing of sin and the conscious, and since the Son is the word of life, eternal life, fellowship brings life, peace, and joy. Our joy is complete in fellowship with Jesus.
do not become yoked with unbelievers, for what is in common between righteousness and lawlessness? or what fellowship has light with darkness?*
Here we see the opposite of fellowship is compared to being unequally yoked which is being joined with something different. If you are righteousness, meaning you are born of God, his seed abides in you thus you are no longer a sinner which is one of lawlessness by nature, no, you have a new nature, of God's divine nature Paul writes. How can divine nature be yoked with sinful nature or light with darkness? the ones born of God are born of Spirit and there is fellowship in Spirit.* The one of Light has fellowship in Light, not in darkness. Hopefully we have a better understanding of the fellowship John writes of.
And this exists the message that we heard from him, and proclaim to you; God exists light and there exists absolutely no darkness.*
God exists holy, and we are now partakers of His divine nature, and through the blood of Christ, there was an acceptable sacrifice that forgave sin and appeased God's wrath toward sin. Jesus was a propitiation for our sin, not just for our sin but the whole world.* Because you are forgiven sin, you are covered by his blood, and you can boldly approach God and more, Jesus gave us the power to become a child, therefore, we can approach him boldly as children, he is not wrathful toward us for sin. However, because he exists as Light, in which no darkness can have fellowship and because darkness is sin and we still exist in a body in which sin dwells, how can we approach him if we walk in darkness? The solution, of course, is to come into the Light.
If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not bring forth the truth. Now, if we walk in the Light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.*
First, we need to address the issue, can a child of God sin and walk in darkness? yes, in fact, the next verse speaks to this, if saying that we have no sin, deceiving ourselves and the truth exists not in us.* So we establish this is alos for believers, which fits with Paul's writing in Romans were we read he was practicing sin, doing the very thing he hated, though inwardly he delighted in God's laws. Paul found this principle that evil was near him, and sin was in his flesh, thus it was not him, it was not his true nature, but still it existed. The one who has an addiction finds it easy to sin as the conscious is seared but he will exist in a wretched state as he is going against his new nature. The child of God needs to practice or as the parable of sowing suggests, bring forth fruit. In such we see the importance of fellowship and the joy that it brings.
No one born of God brings forth sin because His seed abides in him and he doesn't continue sinning because he is born of God.*
It is an amazing promise for those born of God but struggling with sin in the flesh, the promise is that greater is he that is in you. What is in you? God's seed, you are born of God, a partaker of his divine nature. Now, Jesus gives us a good picture in the parable of sowing of how this seed grows up and brings forth fruit. There are three phases a seed, seedling, and a fruit-bearing plant. The seed of God is planted in us, and like a fruit tree the seed grows deep roots before the seedling sprouts up and then with proper Light and nutrients it will grow up and bear fruit. It is not an overnight process and those in which God's seed is planted will not continue in sin because they are born of God, they will grow up.
now, if we walk in the light as he exists light, we have fellowship with each other...
Since God is Light and can have no fellowship with darkness the man born of the flesh, of sinful nature, can not have fellowship with him. But because of Christ, we can now have fellowship with God. In this God so loved the world that he sent his son as a propitiation, appeasement, atonement for sin. If we walk in darkness we can't have fellowship with light, but Jesus gives us the solution to sin. If we walk in the Light we have fellowship. So repent, turn from darkness and walk in the Light, it is that simple, But you can't do it without believing in Jesus. Losing fellowship I believe is what happened to Jesus on the cross when he cried Father why have you forsaken me, in his humanity he took on sin breaking fellowship. God did not remove his Spirit from Jesus, this would contradict the idea of the oneness of the Trinity. Nor does he remove his Spirit from the child that sins. But we see that He is holy, existing Light which can not any fellowship, none whatsoever with darkness.
Little children, I am writing these things so you may not sin, but if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. And he exists a propitiation for our sin. Now, not for ours only but also for the entire world.*
Jesus was a propitiation and notice the word, he exists a propitiation, for the entire world. He doesn't have to die on a cross to forgive sin, again and again, he died once to forgive sin once and for all, and he exists a propitiation and an advocate. Like the old testament temple in which God's Spirit dwelt inside on a corrupt earth, so he dwells in our corrupt body. Surely it is needed for Jesus to be a continued propitiation and advocate if God exists Holy and I still exist in a body in which sin dwells. If not I could not approach him boldly. Of course, I need to deal with the issue of sin to have fellowship, thus to have fellowship and walk in the Light I must bring forth truth, walk in truth. I walk in darkness John writes if I hate my brother and if I continue in sin fellowship with God is broken. If I do not forgive, will God forgive me? he has and will if i am in Christ but can I have fellowship, if I am in darkness, in sin? no, therefore fellowship requires walking in truth and love.
I write to you not so that you do not know the truth but that you know the truth and no lie exists from the truth.*
Jesus is the Word of Life, and in Him is Eternal Life. In fellowship we have Life, and our joy is filled up when we walk in fellowship with Him. God's divine nature is love so fellowship is to walk in love. Jesus is also the Truth, so to be in fellowship is to exist truth in love. Jesus is the Light among darkness, our advocate with the Father who is holy, our solution to the darkness that exists in the world and the evil that is near us. To bring forth fruit is to practice or walk in truth. Walking in truth is walking in love. Truth in love is how we have fellowship. I would like to say the reward of walking in truth is fellowship but we are born of God into fellowship, we have the seed of truth in us by birth. So this is not about consequenxes good or bad, it is not about living to the letter of the law, and not about suurendering or giving control, truly, it is about becoming your true nature. It is about growing up, bringing forth fruit, that of truth and righteousness. There is a testimony of water, overcoming sin, and like a young person growing up becoming an adult, there is joy and fellowship. There is life in fellowship as Jesus is Life. There is joy in fellowship.
