Wait on Yahweh, be of good courage, he will strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on Yahweh.*
What does it mean to wait on the Lord? Why do we need to wait? Such a concept is like persistence, we are not pestering God to help, no, there is a renewing of the mind in the act of persistence, so it is in waiting. Paul writes in fighting the good of contest of faith "I do not box as one beating the air."* The word wait is a transitive to hope and a transitive requires an object. Wait requires hope and hope requires God. Like the word fight in "fight the good contest of faith," it requires action and that there is a "good contest of faith."* Fighting without faith is like boxing at nothing, at the air. Waiting requires an object, God, and an action, hope. Waiting without God and hope is like beating the air. Hope is an element of faith and faith exists of things unseen thus hope is not wishful "boxing at the air," but has is tangible and has a target. In other words waiting on God requires that we hope in Him, and in hope there is a reward, the strengthening of the heart.
Hope in Yahweh, be of good courage, he will strengthen your heart.
This word translated as "be of good courage" means "to be or grow firm or strong, strengthen." It speaks of the physical strength of hands, of the strength of a people, of an army, and of royal power. In context it is not our hands but God's hand which is making us grow firm and strong. The word translated as "he will strengthen" means "to be stout, strong, bold, alert" and implies that God is making us stout, strong, alert, bold and courageous. The word for heart speaks of the inner man, mind, will, heart. The inner man is renewed in Spirit, and truly a new Spirit and heart that we received implies a new will, as a new creation, thus the strengthening of the heart is through an approved mind. The devotion of our heart comes in waiting.
Hope in God, and he will grow you strong and strengthen your inner man. Wait, I say, on God.*
We see that the issue of our heart, the devotion of our heart is truly related to our mind. The eye is the lamp of the body.* God promises that if we wait on Him he will strengthen us. We fix our eyes on Jesus, trusting and putting our hope in Him. This is amazing truth in regards to our growth, as it takes the pressure off of us. God is strengthening us in His power, we must only wait, hope in Him. In the new covenant His grace is sufficient for us as His power is being perfected in us. This means I do not beat myself up over falling short, could not God could instantly deliver? but God is doing something much more glorious, strengthening your heart. Wait on the Lord.

persecuted, but not abandoned; laid down, but not destroyed, always carrying in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.*
Like Paul who prayed and begged for God to deliver him from his thorn in the side, God too may choose to leave a thorn in our side. Why did Paul have a thorn in his side and experience such hardships? "Constantly delivered over to death through Jesus, so that Life is manifested, therefore death is working in us but Life in you."* This is the concept that Christ gave himself for us so that we might experience life. Some like Paul experience great revelation through trials so that they may teach and give Life to others.
Be strong, he will strengthen your heart you who wait for the LORD!*
Hope in God, and he will grow you strong and strengthen your inner man. Wait, I say, on God.*
While I Wait
Again we see the same words, wait on the Lord. Did not Joshua command the people to be strong and courageous? Yes, but let us not leave out this important part; "for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."* How were they to be strong and courageous? by waiting, hoping in God who was with them. So we see this truth that we find strength and courage when we wait on the Lord. And truly in the waiting our mind is renewed to trust and depend upon him. You mean I don't have to be strong but hope in God for my strength? Yes! God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness and He has promised to work out all these things for our good, according to the purpose of his will, from the riches of his grace and glory. Wait on the Lord, it is coming!
Hope in God, and he will grow you strong and strengthen your inner man. Wait, I say, on God.*
