Healthy Eyes

The lamp of the body exists the eye. If your eye exists healthy your whole body exists enlightened with Light.*

Have you ever been around someone and it seemed like their eyes were shining, so that you see Jesus in them? Jesus had qualities that stood out like speaking with authority and power to do mighty things but as far as his physical appearance the scriptures speak of Jesus as being common, but I think he had eyes that shined Light. The concept we see in this verse is if we are whole in Christ, who is the Light, we should be shining forth Light to the world. We are to walk in the Light as he is in the Light. The eye by extension means the faculty of mental perception and understanding. So by extension if the eye is healthy, our perception and understanding is whole, which speaks of a renewed mind, a whole mind, and a sound mind. The question of how are we to be a light unto the world is not just being a witness through speaking good news but also of wholeness in that if your eye is healthy the whole body will be whole, filled with Light. We often expect different and we hear teaching opposite, that we are to be a light before we have healthy eyes and minds. It is beneficial for us to understand what it means to have a healthy eye, to be enlightened in the eyes of our heart in understanding, and how a healthy mind benefits the whole.

... if then your eye exists healthy, your whole body exists enlightened. Now, if your eye exists bad your whole body exists dark. If then the light, the one in you is darkness, how much is that darkness? No one can server two masters, for he will either hate the one and love the other either he will be devoted to one and despise the other, not serving God and earthly riches...*

We see in the scriptures often the use of the word enlightened. If your eye is healthy the whole body is enlightened. The lamp is what puts forth light like a candle and the candle is the eyes and the eyes cause the enlightenment of the whole body. If the eyes are focused on dark things then the light to the world is also dark and the body is not healthy. Here we have insight of what it means to be divided in devotion and really this is our goal, to devoted to God and not the things of this world. In the parable of the sower Jesus explains how the weeds choke out the plants, or how believers can have dark eyes in this life, "but the cares of this age, and the deceit of earthy riches, and other desires come in a choke the word and it becomes barren".*  These weeds are devotion killers, they keep you riding the fence in loyalty.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill can not be hidden, nor do you light a lamp and put it under a large bowl but on a lampstand giving light to all in the house.*

The lampstand in the Old Testament temple held the lamps for the twelve tribes of Israel, a people dedicated and consecrated to God. The lamp of the body exists the eye, so each tribe and each individually would give off light but each lamp was meant to be put on a lampstand to shine as a whole. The city on a hill was Jerusalem, one that was to give off light to the world. The light became dark like a light hidden under a bowl. In the New this is symbolic of the children of God, we exist a temple of God, and if the city or eye is not healthy, the whole is unhealthy, the light within us is hidden under a bowl. If the salt, which is to be savory has become unsavory, what is the salt good for? What good is light under a bowl, is it not dark in the house?

I exist the light of the world. The one following Me will never walk in the darkness, but possess the light of life.*

To be a light unto the world, we must be filled with Light, and the Light is Jesus in whom we are to build the city upon. To be filled with Light, contrasted to a light under a bowl, we must have a healthy eye. If we have Light within us but do not have a healthy eye then it is like hiding the Light within us under a bowl. The concept of abiding is connecting (to the Vine) and remaining (in the Vine) and as so we come to the Light having enlightenment and we remain or continue walking in the Light for enlightenment. And it is like food that endures unto Life, we not only eat, take one bite from the Living bread but we continue to feed on the Living bread. His words exist eternal Life and his words continue to give Life. A lamp is a candle or something that gives off light, thus what gives off light is the eyes. What good is it to be consecrated and holy and not give off Light to people around you? Is not such light really light under a bowl and is it not dark in the house? The city represents the whole, the capital representing the whole nation, the eye representing the whole body and if the eye or the nation's capital is not a light unto the world, the whole is unhealthy. The symbolism of a light on a hill is of maturity, if the city or the eye is mature the whole body is.

now, that sown on the good soil, this exists the one hearing the message and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces that hundredfold, that sixty, and that thirty.*

Good soil is the person, the one hearing the message and understands this one bears fruit. The thorny soil is the one who hears and receives but the thorns choke him out. The kingdom of heaven is like plants among weeds; those planted by the devil for the purpose of choking out, in darkness, so the plant doesn't receive sufficient light thus will not grow and bear fruit. The rocky soil is the one who hears and receives but is not deeply rooted, again another deception of the devil adding his yeast to the whole so everyone is infected, like with business, doing good things but forsaking being deeply rooted. The hard soil is the one who hears but doesn't understand, the birds come and snatch the seed away. Surely, the devil plants tiny seeds in the garden that become big plants, a haven for birds that snatch away the seed.

hear the parable of the sower; all hearing the message of the kingdom and not understanding, the evil one comes snatching away that sown in his heart. This exist that sown along the path."*

The condition of the hard soil, seed sown along the path is they have no understanding, and next wee the weeds and rocky soil (choking out and with no deep roots) a lack of understanding. The good soil; "this exist the one hearing the message and understands it, who indeed bears fruit..."* Besides hearing and receiving what is the key ingredient? The first has no understanding but the last who bears fruit has. This word for understanding is from two words "together with" and "put, send," it means "put facts together," or to arrive at a summary or final understanding. Understanding is key, "to redeem the time, because the days are evil, through this, not becoming foolish but understanding the will of the Lord."* It is not wise nor prudent to live a Christian life without any understanding. In understanding we realize the will of God, and can accept His will as perfect and pleasing, which comes through an approved mind, a renewed mind. How does the eyes shine?

For where your treasure exists, there your heart exists also. The lamp of the body exists the eye. If then your eye exists healthy your whole body exists Light.*

In regards to the treasure of your heart, the eye or the mind is the pathway to the treasure of the heart. Jesus said, "Love the Lord your God in all your heart, and in all your soul, and in all your mind."* Can we just love him with all our heart, why do we need to love God with all our mind? This word for mind speaks of mental processing; mind, thinking, understanding; this is a part of the soul that thinks and processes information into understanding, including the making of choices, the seat of which is the heart. If you are not a believer the issue is your heart, you are a slave to your sinful nature and its desires, when you believe God will give you a new heart and put His Spirit within you. Now as believers we are indebted no longer to sin but to righteousness, our new nature, now, the issue is of the mind. We overcoming evil through renewal of the minds as evil takes captive through a carnal mind, warring against the soul. The believer captive exists in a wretched state which is against his true nature, against his new inner being. He is born of Spirit and has a new heart so I believe the heart issue is solved upon belief. The mind is the gateway to the body thus the heart, and we are to guard, watch over our mind as evil wars against it. If we are again captivated by evil we defile our conscious which can be cleansed through the washing of the Word. The mind encompasses our identity and soul, so we must work out our salvation; to love God with our soul and mind.

Because I see your salvation, whom prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the people...*

Godly understanding comes from God, through revelation. This requires us to not lean on our own understanding and it is something we must seek, "no one exists understanding, no one exist seeking the one God."* This requires some mental faculty of reasoning, it is considering the words of Jesus and it is also the Spirit revealing, giving understanding. Understanding is through revelation, in fact, revelation means what is revealed, disclosed, information made known with an implication that the information can be understood. Revelation is understanding that God is making known to us. God does not reveal what we can not handle nor perceive so even the simplest mind can believe. Information is made known but one must possess, lay hold of it, receive it. The root word for believing speaks of a mental persuasion that occurs when we consider the words of Jesus, who is the "light for revelation," and during such considering, revelation and understanding is granted and we are drawn to Jesus by the Spirit. Believing is the "work" of God, but we must labor in our minds as to seek it and lay hold of it. Salvation came in a body prepared, one who would be "a light for revelation."

... so that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, gives you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation, in knowing him, to the extent that the eyes of your heart be enlightened, you comprehending the hope, the one whom calling, how very, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.*

Paul is praying that they are enlightened, receiving wisdom, and revelation in knowing Him. What does it means "the eyes of your heart be enlightened? Is Paul speaking of initial knowing or of enlightenment to know him more? If I know Christ, assured of salvation, the Spirit is within me then what needs to be enlightened? my heart or my understanding? I believe the eyes represent the mind thus a healthy mind will direct a heart that belongs to God. So it becomes really a mater of knowing our identity which comes from revelation and understanding in my mind. What we comprehend in our minds is that which we are enlightened to or not. Comprehending means to have understanding, to know how, to possess information; recognize, realize, to come to know. This truth opens so much up to us in the scriptures but at the same time holds us accountable; His divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and devotion to God. Like our eyes should be enlightened that the true blessings come from the riches of his grace and glory, which God has given us revelation in.* The treasure of our heart is best seen in what we set our eyes on or what we set our minds on.

Paul writes from the riches of his grace comes adoption, in which we have been predestined, called, and in Him we possess the promise of inheritance, in which the Holy Spirit is a pledge of. How very rich, from the riches of His glory, that bestowed upon us the one He calls sons! Paul prays that we comprehend agape love, be enlightened in the knowledge of the Son and to life and godly devotion. Everything we have for our victory is there. Godliness, being devoted, accepting His willing, being obedient, overcoming sin, all has been given to us but we must lay hold of it. How? This word for enlightened means to give light, shine; (pass.) to be enlightened, illuminated. This concept of enlightenment is used throughout the scriptures. So how are we enlightened?

the true light, the one whom enlightens all people, exists coming into the world.*

The true Light whom enlightens is Jesus. Enlightenment is not a one time event it is having and increasing in the knowledge of Jesus. In Luke we read Jesus saying, "if then your whole body is illuminated, having no part in darkness, it exists enlightened, as when a lamp gives you light with its rays."* Like faith which is increased and strengthened until full realization, so is being enlightened until fully comprehended it is on going, so do not turn back in unbelief. Also like sanctification in which we have fully in Spirit we must also possess it in mind and soul, his word washes and sanctifies us in truth.

nor do you light a lamp and put it under a large bowl but on a lampstand giving light to all in the house.*

If we are in Christ the Light is within us but Jesus said do not hide this light. Think about it, if the light at night in the house was put under a bowl hidden would it give off light? No, it would be dark in the house, so though the light is there those who walk by our house will not see a light. Letting our light shine is not just talking about Jesus but of the concept of living like Jesus. In this we see the concept of walking in the Light, if we abide in the Light as he is in the Light, the eye is healthy and the whole body is illuminated in Light. If the eye is dark the light is hidden, and the body is in darkness, one is walking in darkness again enslaved to sin in the body. Giving Life to the mortal body is through walking in the Light. The Light in us and walking in the Light is through our eyes being enlightened which is in the knowledge in the Son, initially when we believed and continually as we grow having understanding that bears fruit, hundred, sixty, and forty. In fact Jesus said if we pray to bear fruit for this purpose it will given to us. Pray to be enlightened. We can have the Light within us, but it can be hidden under a bowl in which case we walk as in darkness, no one sees the light in us. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. What is a true witness if not one from whose eyes Light shines? A true witness is the one who walks the Way, walking in truth and walking in the Light.

For if you possess these qualities also abundantly placing, you will not be ineffective neither in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.*

How do we have understanding in the knowledge of the Son? How are our eyes enlightened? We know it is to walk by faith, abiding in the truth but we are to add to our faith these qualities of excellence, knowledge, godly-power, endurance, godly-devotion, brotherly love, and agape love. If we place them before or in addition to our faith we cause effectiveness to abound, we will not be lacking in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a path to walking in the Light. Peter doesn't write add to your faith serving, giving, and tithing, then you will effective and have knowledge in Christ, no, as Christ came prepared beforehand to do good works we are His workmanship prepared beforehand. If we put the good works before the preparation, we will be ineffective. And we are warn the "choking out" occurs because they lack deep roots, or lack understanding in the scriptures. "If you possess these qualities.." you will be effective, this the devil knows and hits us hard each time we add to our faith one of these qualities.

For this very reason, bring into play in all diligence, in your faith add excellence and in upon excellence knowledge, and in upon knowledge godly-power... For if you possess these qualities also abundantly placing, you will not be ineffective and not in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.*

The Greek word for excellence means "be excellent in all things" which includes goodness and moral virtue. Add knowledge which speaks of personal understanding in the knowledge of the Son. Those mature are full of goodness and are able to receive and give instruction.* Through enlightenment one possesses understanding and abides in truth and love, which is walking in the Light. This word for knowledge speaks of "knowing" as of personal experience, a personal understanding that comes through the knowledge of the Son. I believe this is what the parable of the sower is telling us, those who receive with joy and fall away lack understanding, the "eye" by extension speaks of perception and understanding. As a believer producing fruit is the same as being whole so a key to being whole is having a healthy eye, which speaks of understanding. We should teach people to seek truth and understanding in Christ and not tell them what to "know," there is a difference, the demons "know" of God.

By contrast the fruit of the Spirit exists agape love, inner joy, inner peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, godly-power, against such things exist no law.*

Forbearance means patient enduring of evil.* Paul writes even under the Law with its judgement and condemnation, God still patiently endured evil. How hard is it for us to patiently endure evil? Surely if we agape love we can. Is anyone ever thrown in jail for kindness? Jesus was accused of blasphemy against God, and sedition against Rome, nevertheless he possessed godly-power and was a Light unto the world. This word godly-power is from en, "in" and krate, "power" and the addition of "-ia" says it is a state or condition of possessing power over something. This word is often translated as self-control but I have been careful to use another word so as to distinguish it from a new age type of thinking of enlightenment, were self-control needs no understanding, just free your mind. Godly-power is a quality we add to our faith upon knowledge so there is an effort on our part but we are wise to remember we rule over sin under grace as the power comes through trusting in God, not self.

in your faith add... endurance, and in upon endurance, godly-devotion, in upon godly-devotion brotherly love, in upon brotherly love agape love. For if you possess these qualities also abundantly placing, you will not be ineffective and not in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.*

In God's power we learn to endure, persevere, be steadfast. Steady and fast, we run as a runner runs the race set before him, building endurance. Also I have been careful with this word for godly-devotion, it is from eusebe, "devoted" and with the additional "-ia" it means it is a state or condition of devotion. This word is often translated as godliness or to mean reverence towards God and even piety, and truly we can say these agree, but properly it means being devoted to God. Another word we see similar is theo-sebeia which also speaks of a state of being devoted to God.* Being devoted to God is something that makes us effective, and we possess godly devotion through increasing in the knowledge of Jesus. It is truth that to know Him fully is to love him and it is also true that to know him fully is to be devoted to Him. We will return to this topic but quickly lets look at how we bring life to our mortal body and give Life to others.

The light of the eyes gladdens the heart, good news makes healthy the bones.*

This is a powerful truth, not only having meaning of the state of our soul and happiness but also it speaks of how our eyes should be a light to others, eyes that bring good news and gladden the heart of others. We hear much about speaking life into others through our words but we also see if our eyes are healthy we shine light unto others. Wow, what a witness to walking in the Light! If we have healthy eyes the "light of the eyes gladdens the heart," but if our eyes are dark the news they portray is like bad news that dries up the bones. We should teach, discipline with healthy eyes and even respond to others who do us wrong, with loving eyes. Even a baby notices the difference often crying over when seeing mean eyes while rejoicing in eyes that shine. Children will rebel against a father who punishes them with angry eyes. And if children are always see unhealthy eyes they also will grow up with the same eyes. If the eyes are a sign of wholeness then they are telling, if we walk in Light or in darkness. "If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth."* If my eyes do not shine forth love for my brother my whole body is in darkness.

if your eye exists healthy your whole body exists filled with Light.*

From a philosophical sense a joyful heart is good medicine. "A joyful heart is well like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones."* Look at your children with unhealthy eyes and you will break their spirit. A broken spirit is much more than not having joy for a time, it is what happens when the weeds win. Even when our life circumstances are against us, always, the solution to an unhealthy heart, one weary and discouraged, is to have healthy eyes. It is by revelation that God gives us understanding through the knowledge of the Son and the eye by extension means the faculty of mental perception and understanding, therefore the eye is our perception and understanding. "The lamp of the body exists the eye" means the eye is the pathway to the heart, thus an enlightened mind illuminates the whole body in Light and wholeness. To have healthy eyes is to have a healthy mind, one that is whole and to have a whole body. This speaks of being a Light to the world and of how we bringing life to our mortal body is the same way we shine Light through the eyes to the world. A healthy eye by extension speaks of a healthy mind, thus a healthy mind brings gladness to our own hearts and shines forth light through the eyes to those around us.

His divine power gives us all, that for life and godly devotion through the knowledge of the one who called us, his own glory and might.*

How do we increase in godly devotion? Again godly-devotion, is also translated as godliness, reverencing God, or having piety, and we can even say this speaks of the "fear of God" that some say is beneficial for producing devotion to God. Surely it is beneficial for us to know how to be devoted to God. Is it through fear, that we reverence and are devoted to God? the law had the fear of punishment as power but did not perfect men to be devoted to God. How about consequences, are we devoted to God for rewards, are we to devoted to God by being mindful of the negative consequences of sin? but what happens when persecution comes when we follow Jesus? So how are we devoted to God? His divine power has given us all we need for godly devotion through the knowledge of Jesus. Now, I have understanding, and I hope you are too become enlightened in the knowledge of the Son, for devotion to God.
