Even so all the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. All who heard took to their heart, saying “who then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.*
Talk began throughout the hills, the Spirit of God was moving, angel's were visiting, something was a stirring. It began at the Temple, the people for an unusual amount of time waited for Zachariah to light incense and when he finally came out he could not talk, motioning to them he had been visited by an angel. The talk increased when Zachariah and Elizabeth would give birth to a son, both advanced in years and Elizabeth barren. And then another angel appears in a town of Galilee called Nazareth to a virgin pledged to Joseph. Who, then is this child the people wondered.
Look, you will conceive in womb and give birth a son and you will call his name Jesus, this person exists great, called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God gives him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for all time and of his kingdom exists no end.*
Who then is this child? born of a virgin? "Behold, the virgin conceives and gives birth to a son and they call the one, Emmanuel which exists translated, 'God with us.'"* He is distinguished, great, wonderful, the Son of the Most High. He is the Lord of the heavens sitting on the throne of David reigning over all things and His kingdom is at hand and will never end. He is the Word of God who was with God and was God, who created all things, he is the Light and Life of men, who became flesh, who came down from heaven and dwelt among men.
For in Him the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form.*
Who then is this child born among men? John was great among men, but he came to bear witness about the One, whose shoes he was unworthy to tie. Who then is this child? "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory as the begotten-one from the Father, full of grace and truth."* In the child, the fullness of the deity of God dwelt in bodily form. Who then is this child? the Son of Man, the Son of God, who came in the fullness of the Father of Grace and truth, the Holy One of God, alive and living bread coming down from heaven giving life to the world. Why then was this child born?
to give his people the knowledge of salvation, the one by the forgiveness of their sins, through tender mercies of God, by which the sun of heaven will visit us to shine on those in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.*
John came to prepare the way. The Law served its purpose, the commandments exposed sin and sin abounded, "none existed righteous, no not one."* Judgement had been passed, man was condemned and sentenced but God showed tender mercy and a little child was born "to give his people the knowledge of salvation." The little child came to take away the sin of the world, "the one by the forgiveness of their sins." The King of heaven is born, a lowly child in a humble manger, he came to "visit us to shine on those in darkness and in the shadow of death." The little child came to bring the good news prepared on shoes of peace, "to guide our feet into the way of peace." And "the very least accepting him, to them he gives the right to become children of God, those who believe in His name."*

"Blessed is the Lord God of Israel for that he has visited us and brought redemption for his people, raising up power of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, just as spoken through the mouth of his holy prophets from old. Saving us from our adversary and from the hand of all who hate us, showing mercy promised to our fathers and remembering his Holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to give us deliverance from the hand of the adversary so that we may serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days."* Who, Then Is This Child? He is called the Son of God, Holy One, Righteous One, Word of God, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal, Prince of Peace, God with us.
