I Will Lift You Up

"Also if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to myself.”1

This word for lifted up properly, raise high, lift up, exalt. In the wilderness Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a standard, a pole and if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.2 Paul writes Moses wrote about Jesus, this is one instance. Isaiah prophesied that from the root of Jesse, He shall stand as a standard, that all nations will look to, and for the second time would recover His remnant.3

"He displayed this power in the working of His mighty strength, that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,"18

The blessings promised to Abraham, comes through redemption, that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.12 God said to Abraham I will bless and make your name great, and he exalted Abraham, he becoming fully convinced being strengthened in faith. He promises to lift us up also, to make our name great, to lift us up. In Moses God showed His mighty power against Pharaoh, so that He would be lifted up, and they would give glory to Him. He taught the people in the wilderness to trust in Him and to enter His rest, so that when he exalted them, they would give Him the glory.

"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”11

This word for exalt is the same word as lifted up. This is what Satan did, he exalted himself. A sign of a godly person is humility, a principle of the kingdom, he who humbles himself will be exalted, he will be lifted up. Though He is exalted above all names, Jesus is humble and lowly in heart. It is easy for men who seek Jesus to submit to leaders who by example lead this way, not lording over others, not seeking personal gain, but through humility, leading others to Christ. Jesus is Lord, those who lord over others, exalt themselves and sit in the preeminent seat of Christ. Jesus calls all those who are weary and heavy laden, to lift them up, burdens light.

"For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth."26

The new covenant is a ministry of reconciliation, of peace, and of one which delivers the gospel in peace. The seed of righteousness sown in peace produces fruit of trust and rest. In the old covenant God's mighty power was shown in signs and wonders, like those shown against Pharaoh. In the new the glory is shown in the Son who was lifted up. And His glory is seen in us, his mighty power working within us, lifting us up into newness of Life. The weak and humble God lifts up, "But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak... so that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." It is He who lifts us up, so we boast in Christ. Such gives great glory to God, as it is not by the power of men, birthright, nor by worldly standards, but by God's mighty power.

"He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you."17

Jesus speaks of the Spirit of truth, who guides us into all truth, the Spirit doesn't speak on His own but speaks only what He hears declaring to us what is to come. Jesus said His words are Spirit and Truth, it is the Spirit that draws and reveals to men the truth. He "will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you." The Spirit is the greatest testimony that we are His children, a Spirit of Adoption, and a Spirit of life that raises or exalts or lifts us up into Life.

"... that everyone looking on the Son and believing on Him has eternal life and I will raise him up..."19

We often think of being raised up as in eternal life, of going to heaven, but Jesus is Eternal Life, this we abide in, as it is available to us, here today. We are given the same power that raised Christ from the dead. This word for raise is from ana "in, through" and histemi "I cause to stand, stand" properly to stand up (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive) -- arise, lift up, raise up. How are we raised up? the Son was raised up so that those looking to Him receive Life. This word for looking means "I behold, look at, experience," it means to consider, look on, perceive, behold. "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world." All those who come to Him, consider Him, and believe in him receive Life.

"... that all that he has given me, none I will lose of His, but raise them up on the last day."18

Faith has a root word that means persuade, thus we see the laboring into the knowledge of the Son. It is understanding, by revelation of the Spirit and knowing of the Father as in personal experience. Believing is the work of God, we must seek, contemplate, receive such riches of His grace and glory. This is the food we are to seek and eat as Jesus said, "Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life which the Son of Man will give you."14 Food that gives eternal life is given by the Son, thus look to the Son lifted up and He will lift you up.

"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day."44

We see the promise of the Holy Spirit, "Being therefore lifted up to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out..."14 We have this power as children of God, and in such power we become children of God and we experience Life. "To the one who believes in Me, it is just as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”15 We see that we are being lifted up into Life being raised from death into newness of Life. "And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power."13 The Spirit would be given when Jesus was lifted up and glorified.16 It was the Father who would glorify the Son.17 Jesus said, "As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me."56

"Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."54

John writes Jesus was in the synagogue at this time. He didn't ask them to come forward, nor did he ask them to pray a prayer to invite Him into their hearts, nor did he ask them to raise their hands in obedience. What did He say to them? He told them they must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Surely on purpose, it was a difficult thing to understand, contemplate, many of his disciples heard it and said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” But it is the Spirit that reveals that His words are eternal Life, and that He is the Holy One. It is by faith that it be according to grace, so we do not boast or exalt ourselves by human knowledge and self-righteousness. The Spirit revealed truth to Peter and he said, "You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”69

"And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”1

We have seen the word for lifted up, "raise high, lift up, exalt." This word for draw "I drag, draw, pull, persuade" properly, induce (draw in), focusing on the attraction-power involved with the drawing; metaphorically, to draw by inward power, lead. This is the glory of the new covenant in Christ, that by His mighty power, we are being lifted up into newness of Life. The new covenant, Paul writes, is a ministry of the Spirit, not a ministry of condemnation, not of the Law "not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."5 Jesus was lifted up so that we know He is from the Father.

When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me."4

Not only was Christ lifted up to draw all men to Him, he was lifted up as a great sign, to rise from the dead, such declared He was the Son of God, "and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord."9 So we see God lifted up the Son, so that all men who look upon Him will be lifted up, raised up. Also Jesus was lifted up on a cross, as an atonement for sin and that we may have Life.

"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life."3

The blood of the Lamb of God cleanses from sin, we must be united in the likeness of His death, so that we are in the likeness of His life. He was raised up by the Spirit, to the right hand of the Father, so that God's mighty power is seen and given to those who believe. Being transformed from glory to glory, His power is seen in us who are being lifted up, most especially seen in the least of these. We see the glory in the new, His mighty power working in us, lifting us up, so that men give glory to Him.21 Jesus said to Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?21 Those who believe in Jesus know by personal experience, His words are eternal Life.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not be lost but will have eternal life."22

This word for not be lost is translated often as perish, however, it is the same word used when Jesus said, "that all that he has given me, none I will lose of His, but raise them up on the last day."18 Of course one who is lost, if not found will surely perish. We see in the prodigal son, the love of a Father, though the son was weak, He would lift him up. "Whoever believes in him will not be lost" such speaks of the Good Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to save the one who was lost. Oh, He came to save the lost, I was that one, but now I am found, and like I, those who believe in Jesus will be lifted up.
