God Hung the Stars

"To him who hung the great lights, for His Grace is everlasting, the sun to rule by day, for His Grace is everlasting, and the moon and the stars to rule by night, for His Grace is everlasting... Give grace to the God of heaven, for His Grace is everlasting."1

God hung the stars, "he appointed the number of stars and to all by name he calls."2 His promise to Abraham, "I will make numerous your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands and will be blessed in your offspring all the nations of the earth."3 As the stars in the skies. Scientists estimate there are over 100 billion stars. Is this what its means that by name he calls the stars, that one has my name? Do we need the stars? we have the sun for day and the moon for night, so why did God make the stars?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light."3

The earth was created before the stars. Current science states that the universe is expanding from the earth, they say this would seem so from anywhere in the universe. True, it is from ones viewpoint, but still there has to exist a beginning. Some call it a "big bang," but I will call it a creation, God spoke it into existence, he created it, how he did it I do not know. Of course any "bang" needs a creation, a spark, elements for expansion.

"The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands."6

He hung the stars because of his infinite grace. "The moon and stars to rule over the night, because of forever favor;"5 Some translations say, "for his love endures forever" or "forever his covenant loyal," which speaks of his love and a sign of his covenant. The words used are olam, "forever" and checed, "favor." Forever speaks of infinity and favor speaks of Grace. Surely the new covenant is a covenant of grace, of everlasting favor. I will now think of the Dippers as the blood Christ poured out and as the living water that he offers to all freely. I hope to find more signs of his love in the stars, for his love is infinite.

"God hung the stars in the sky—the Dipper, the Orion, the Pleiades, and the chamber of the south."7

In the beginning God hung the stars, such speaks of his glory and his handiwork, and of his great love he has for us. The stars are a love letter to us. Have you ever seen a constellation map? maybe so, but did you know there is Bible version? so instead of twelve zodiac signs there are twelve apostles. Thanks Julius Schiller, you realized God's love is reflected in the stars.

"For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His grace toward those who revere Him. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our offense from us."7

This word for offense is identical with pasa', "step, march" through the idea of expansion; to break away. The stars are breaking away from earth and man breaks away from God's love, but his love is higher than the heavens are above the earth, such expanse of the heavens is toward infinity. For God so loved us he sent his son, for those who receive his son, he has given them the right to become a star named in the sky, a child of God.

"Why did I hang the stars? because I love you"
