Eat Bread

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst."1

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them."4 This word for eat is trógó, which means to gnaw, crunch, chew. The idea is of chewing or meditating on the Word of God, Jesus. And it implies that this is how we abide or remain. This word for remain is menó and means to remain, not to depart, not to leave, to last, to endure. Eternal life is eating the bread of life and drinking the living water, daily. It is abiding in Jesus, the Vine, the Word of God, the bread from heaven.
"Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.3
"The one having endured to the end, he will be saved."4 This word for endure has the root word remain, menó (from hupo and menó ) literally, remaining under (the load), bearing up (enduring); for the believer, this uniquely happens by God's power. "And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation."5 How do I endure, man up, bear the load? I Eat Bread, the Word, the Bread of Life, I abide in it continually. It is my daily bread. As bread nourishes my body, the bread from heaven nourishes my soul. As bread brings nutrients from the earth to strengthen my earthly body, bread from heaven brings nutrients from above to strengthen my soul and my mortal body. As earthly bread satisfies my hunger, bread from heaven satisfies my soul. "Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!"6

"Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?"7

I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold,
I'd rather be His than have riches untold;
I'd rather have Jesus than houses or land,
Yes, I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand.

Than to be the king of a vast domain
or be held in sin's dread sway
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause,
I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame,
I'd rather be true to His holy name.

Than to be the king of a vast domain
or be held in sin's dread sway
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today...

He's fairer than the lilies of the rarest bloom.
He's sweeter then the honey from out of the comb.
And He's all that my hungering spirit needs.
I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead...
