"The Holy Spirit this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while the first tabernacle was yet standing:"1
Jesus became our High Priest. To do such He had to meet the earthly requirements of the priesthood, to enter the court he had to be a circumcised Jew, the old covenant had been established in blood. He had to be set apart, His mother was from the lineage of the priesthood, so Jesus inherited this right. He was baptized by John for the remission of sin. To be high priest and to enter into the second part, the most holy place, required water purification and blood sacrifice for the remission of sins. John baptized Jesus for the remission of sin and His blood was shed for the atonement of sin. Jesus was circumcised, from the lineage of David as king and Aaron as priest, he was consecrated, he was baptized, by water purification, he was the spotless Lamb of God, and Paul writes that because of an important element, the eternal Spirit of God, which Jesus received from the Father when baptized by John, he remains an eternal high priest.
The first tabernacle was a copy of things to come and the Way to this most holy place was not made known. Jesus provided this way that was hidden in the beginning. He was able to by water and blood, a sinless life, and by the Spirit of God, and as such he remains our eternal High Priest. Jesus provided the Way to the most holy place and we can boldly approach the throne of Grace through Jesus. Jesus is the Way to the Father, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."3 And there is more. in the holy place is light, lamps on a stand, Jesus is not only the way to the Holy He is the light, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."4 This light is life, "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind."5 This light was lifted up to draw all men to Him.6 And there is the showbread, the bread for God, placed among it was the Septuagint, the word of God. Jesus is the Word, the author of faith and salvation, he is the bread of life, we must eat this bread for life.7
"Once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, being designated by God as a high priest..."8 We enter the holy place by the Way of Jesus, the eternal Spirit and by the sanctification of Truth. Full of grace and truth He came, for the sanctification of men. The earthly was symbolic of things to come. He is the bread and word and life and truth and the way. The gifts and sacrifice of the priest is symbolic of today as these, washing and fleshly ordinances, are earthly and do not sanctify the conscious, this His blood achieves.8 Jesus is our high priest, we are called into priesthood, to be consecrated, set apart, for divine service, sanctification of the conscious is needed for such service. The high priest has all authority and He doesn't give authority but gifts, divine gifts to men so others too will find the way, the truth. and the life. As the priests of the earthly tabernacle each had a purpose in the temple, so do we today. God's Spirit testifies within us.
"Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption."9 Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered unblemished blood to purify the conscious from dead works, so that we may serve a living God. By one offering he has perfected eternally those being sanctified.10 Notice He has said, those being sanctified, implying a continued process. We are perfected, victory has already been won, there is justification and sanctification of our spirit, but we must work out our salvation, there is a further sanctification of the soul. We have boldness to enter by the blood of Jesus, since Jesus provided this new living way, let us draw near with a sincere heart sprinkled clean from an evil conscious and our bodies washed with pure water.11
God's spirit testifies within us "the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them."11 Like the gift of grace, the Father giving the Son, the Son gives gifts to men. Jesus is the way to the Father. Saul spoke of the followers of Jesus as belonging to The Way. They belonged to Jesus, the way to the most holy place.12 On the road to Damascus Saul would become Paul, he met the Way to the Father.
