It
was fitting indeed to him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things,
many sons to glory having brought the author of the salvation of them through sufferings to make perfect the one both indeed sanctifying and those being sanctified of one are all for which reason not he is ashamed brothers them to call.1
Jesus is the author of our salvation, this Jesus, the Word which was with and was God, in the beginning, everything was created for and by him. Jesus is also the author of faith.2 This word for author used in author of salvation and faith is arxēgós, which means originator, author, founder; from arxḗ, "the first" and ágō, "to lead, to lead by accompanying, to lead by laying hold of." This Jesus laid hold of me, leads me, he is with me, I abide in him and he in me, I lay hold, seize, overtake, comprehend. Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.3
Suffering leads to perfection in Christ. In route to Jerusalem the Holy Spirit warned Paul in every city on the way, saying that bonds and afflictions await.4 Why would God warn Paul in every city? Surely, through suffering to perfect him for his calling, If I would not be willing to go die for him I would question my dying for him daily, if I die daily I would literally go die for him. Paul in Rome increases the gospel to the Gentiles, he is chained to the Imperial Guard of Rome and speaks the gospel freely for 2 years. Paul would be persecuted and would eventually be killed, he knew such was coming, and it is believed he was beheaded by the Roman emperor. Yes God prepared Paul for such. This persecution is something most Western Christians know nothing of, we have not shed blood for our faith.
We are to highly praise the persecuted, they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.5 To God the persecuted are precious, so we are not to make light of such, we are to pray for our persecuted brothers as if we are chained with them, we are to participate in their suffering. This is what we are to do with Jesus, participate in his suffering. Paul would write I consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course.6 We have been justified and we are working out this salvation, being sanctified, it is not that we have already obtained it fully, we pursue, we lay hold of it as if to overtake it.
Jesus through suffering was sanctified and we through suffering are being sanctified. though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. Yes, I am to die daily and through suffering I am being made perfect. This word for to make perfect is teleioó it means I complete, accomplish, make perfect; to consummate, reaching the end-stage, i.e. working through the entire process (stages) to reach the final phase (conclusion). The root (tel-) means "reaching the end (aim)."9 It is well-illustrated with the old style telescope, unfolding (extending out) one stage at a time to function at full-strength (capacity effectiveness). I aim, press on, for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.10 That I might lay hold of it as Christ laid hold of me.11
Persecution increases the effectiveness of sanctification. This is the end result of his sufferings, our salvation, we are being made perfect. This is the same for his words, his commands do not return void, they have an end result or consummation.12 The end result of our suffering is to be made perfect in him, and in such he is not ashamed to call us brothers, to declare our name, to put trust in, and to sing praises of. His children have partaken of flesh and blood so he likewise shared in the same, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power over death.13 And the old man was crucified with him in his death destroying the power of sin.14 Jesus, author of salvation, the end result; giving life, destroying the power of sin and death.
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.15
