But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?1
Agility is defined as the ability to move with quick easy grace, having a quick resourceful and adaptable character.2 What an awesome picture for leaders; moving quick with grace, always adapting and resourceful in character. Leadership in God's kingdom requires agility. An agile leader is one who has an adaptable character. He is always learning, always willing to change even though being under the refiners fire is often painful.
When we have the end in mind our focus is on God's will. We begin like a horse with blinders on, all we can see is his will to be done. This is good at first, as what goes on around us is set out to distract us, to destroy us, so that his will is not accomplished. Once we arrive at the end or a milestone the blinders are removed or widened, the glass becomes clearer as we are becoming more in his fullness.
We have this unique relationship with God. Like a Father who loves all his children, but understands that each is unique and special in their own way. Sometimes his children act irresponsible; blaming, setting up for failure, trying to prove superiority over other siblings, arguing over who is more loved, telling other siblings the Father doesn't love them as much, belittling them with comments like you are not unique, or because I have this uniqueness from the Father I am better than you... Of course such is not from our heavenly Father but from Satan. He is the accuser of brothers and sisters.
The picture of clay minerals seen by a microscope displays an amazing array of crystal formations which make each lump of clay unique.3 God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.4 This dust was material from earth, clay.5 It is suggested that the Hebrew word for clay is Adam. God molds each to a vessel for his use, his spirit in us, we are his children and display the gifts of our Father.
Each vessel is unique, molded by our experience of the Father and of life. We must remember that this an ongoing process, he is always the potter and we the clay, we are a vessel for his use. Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand.6 We seem to develop this attitude that we have arrived, thus we sit back and enjoy the comforts of life, we forget why the vessel was created; carefully and uniquely molded by his hands for a purpose.
Leadership in God's kingdom requires an agile leader, one who accepts change, one who rejoices in the refiners fire knowing it produces endurance. He is always learning, always willing to change. If he ever believes he has arrived, knows everything, or gets comfortable, pride sets in and destruction follows the Bible says. If a vessel is no longer useful, what can the potter do, but replace it? While our mission is of God, we must be careful not to be emboldened to live without change because God continues to bless. The mission is most important, it is his purpose, his will. Be a vessel for use.
