The Spirit Gives Life

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.1

Jesus had just revealed to the people he was the bread of life, sent from the living Father and that he lived because of the Father, so whoever feeds on him also lives because of him, this was the bread that came down from heaven, any who eats will live forever.2 Many did not believe because they could not see past the flesh; human reasoning and logic stood in the way, eat your flesh and drink your blood, what? This was a hard teaching, especially from him being a man from Galilee. Jesus said to them, the words that I speak are Spirit and they are life.

While the disciples had not yet received the Holy Spirit, Jesus did say that the Spirit would draw all men to the Father and here he says that his words are spirit. We know that Jesus is the Word Of God.3 And his word is spirit, we know that God is spirit as we must worship him in spirit and truth. We know that he was of the Father. Jesus said to them, why do you not believe? If you see me you see the Father, for I and the Father are one.4 If Jesus is the word and the truth and his words are spirit and truth and he and the Father are one then the full godhead existed in Jesus; God and man, Son of God and Son of Man.

Many people did not believe, they got hung up on the flesh, they said of Jesus, is he not from Galilee, not from Bethlehem as the prophets wrote. But He was. They wanted a sign, but God had given them a few. Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Emmanuel. Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.5 They were given a sign, born of a virgin with the name Emmanuel that means God with us. Why did they not investigate this to prove or disapprove that he was the Christ? Maybe they did, the people stated. Do not the leaders know indeed that this is truly the Christ?6

Many of the leaders believed he was Christ, but due to fear of being thrown out of the synagogues they did not confess, as they loved the praise of men over God.7 As such they allowed the Pharisees to seek his death, for speaking against their human understanding which had become doctrines and traditions. But Jesus said to them, My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him. Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?7 What an incredulous thing.

Oh to will to do his will, to seek him in spirit and truth, as such we would know concerning the doctrine of God. The people were taught doctrines and traditions of men, but the Spirit had revealed the truth to them and to the religious leaders. And they did not believe. Jesus said these were not of His Father, if they had been they would have heard his voice and believed him, they would know his spirit and truth. They saw his works but they judged him wrongly, i.e. for healing on a Sabbath day. But Jesus told them, Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment. This righteous judgement is of the Father and of the Spirit.8

To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. His Words are Spirit and the Spirit Gives Life, thus His words are life, bread of life, and we have them written down in the Bible. Eat Life.
