Be not teaching and heeding to myths and unaccomplished genealogies which bring questions rather than edifying faith in God, the consummation (telos; the principal end, aim, purpose, goal) of the command (paraggelia; a charge, a precept, rule of living) is Love out of a clean heart and good conscience, a faith not hypocritical. From which some are swerving, turned aside into vain sayings, willing to be teachers of the law but not understanding (noeó; think, consider, conceive, apprehend; realize) either of what they are saying or concerning what they are speaking (diabebaioomai; emphatically assert).1
We must teach things of God's principal end, aim, goal. What is the aim? Stewardship from God that is by faith, love out of a clean heart and good conscience, a faith not hypocritical. A relationship with the Father through Jesus. Instruction not of God is empty instruction, myths and endless genealogies, that have no power. God's plan or goal is the gospel through Jesus Christ, it's instruction is in love, and is to be instructed from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.v.5 It is instruction in love, because it points to him, it is his greatest principle, to love him with all things. This instruction in love costs much and requires us to lay down all. If our instruction is not of Love then it is not of God, and it is nothing, period. The goal or fruit of His instruction is to have a sincere faith, not hypocritical.
Fruitless discussion brings about speculation and questioning of God's word, it doesn't build up in love.v.6-7 Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all things into Him who is the head, Christ.2 Being true in love we grow into Him, and out of him the entire body is Connected and United through assimilation (a joint, band, fastening, ligament) of the supply (provision, equipment, support) in accord with the operation (working, action, productive work)... this causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.3 The Godly measure for sound doctrine is that it builds the body up in love, into Christ! If not it is speculation because there is no revelation, no understanding; they have no understanding of what they say (head knowledge without heart understanding).
Under the new covenant God writes His instructions on our heart. Knowledge comes when we hear and understanding when we apply, work out our salvation. Applied theology. Our testimonies are powerful in this way, this is what we should speak. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners...v.15 This Glorious Gospel, God's aim with the goal of instruction in love. We are to instruct the same, with the aim of love, from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. That doesn't mean we are to be soft in discipline, no, on the contrary, our love is one that causes us to lay down our life, to get in the ditch and help as the good Samaritan did. This love is from God, it engages God with man and his heart. And it engages the enemy, with a charge to wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience.v.18-19
Sound doctrine's goal of instruction is Love. We know that the law is good if one uses it legitimately, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners...and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God.v.8-11 If sound doctrine is legitimate law used justly then unsound doctrine is illegitimate use of the law. This is endless and unfruitful instruction which causes one to question and does not lead one to God's true instruction, of loving him. When instruction is without understanding or realization, or when the law is used against a righteous person it is illegitimate. Those who are legalistic, use God's laws against the righteous, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person.v.8-9 The righteous are no longer under the law but under Grace and live by Faith not by law.
Instruction in love builds up into Christ in love, in faith, into his workmanship. Sound doctrine is according to the gospel of the blessed God! Jesus came to save sinners like me, the worst, he demonstrated his extraordinary patience toward me as an example to others who would believe in Him. Like Paul said, I was like them but God has strengthened me, he considered me faithful not because I obeyed the laws nor was I righteous but because of his great mercy, and my ignorance, his grace was exceedingly abundant. He came to save sinners like me.v.12-15 He chooses to use the weak things of this world to confound the wise, so that we boast only in him. Such a thing magnifies his glory. Now to the King eternal, incorruptible , invisible, only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
