"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him" (1 John 5:13-15).
This is a conditional statement. There are conditions that must be met for God to hear us; And if we ask according to his will And if we know he hears us. For God to hear us we must ask according to his will; we must know his will to ask according to it. He hears us and grants us our requests if we know and ask according to his will. It is that simple, simple faith. But faith can be difficult to grasp, Jesus said if we had faith the size of a mustard seed we could move mountains. So our faith is usually weak, but it doesn't have to be, if we fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith we can know and do his will.
We know that he hears us and that we ask according to his will by faith. "Faith is evidence of things hoped for and substance of things unseen" (Hebrews 11:1). And if we do not know what his will is God gives us help, "the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God" (Romans 8:26-27). Prayer in faith is needed to know his will.

This is a conditional statement. There are conditions that must be met for God to hear us; And if we ask according to his will And if we know he hears us. It is that simple, simple faith. But faith can be difficult to grasp, Jesus said if we had faith the size of a mustard seed we could move mountains. Faith comes by hearing, but we must be willing and doing. "If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from myself" (John 7:17). God hears when we know his will and ask accordingly and we can be confident that he will answer. Prayer is a confidence builder, ask in his will and watch him answer prayer.
"The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit" (James 5:16-18). When God hears, he answers.
