Better is One Day

"For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
O Lord of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!" (Psalm 84:10-12)

Sometimes life is hard to understand, an unexpected death or an illness hits and we grasp for answers. Human nature is to withdraw from God, however we should go to him for refuge and put our trust in him and not in our own understanding, "trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us" (Psalm 62:8; Proverbs 3:5-6). If you can't enter into his presence with thanksgiving and praise, then just be at the door. Better is one day in his courts, even if it is at the door, than a thousand elsewhere.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). Jesus understands, he was tempted as we are, he is able to sympathize with our weaknesses, "let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:14-15). This is one of the great promises of the new covenant; we can boldly draw near to him to receive grace as needed. Take refuge in the one who is good and faithful, "Oh, taste and see that Jehovah is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!" (Psalm 34:8)

"For He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty" (Psalm 91:1).
