Walk by the Spirit

"Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law" (Galatians 5:16-18).

The law of the Spirit of life sets one free, for what the law could not do, God did through Jesus Christ (Romans 8:2-3). Jesus came in the flesh to sentence to death sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law would be fulfilled in us, who walk in the Spirit (Romans 8:3-4). We walk in the Spirit by faith and it establishes the law and our righteousness in Christ (Romans 3:9-10;22).

If we are in Christ then we have a new born again spirit, our inner being is reconciled with God. If Christ is in us, the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness (Romans 8:9-10). Thus only through walking by the Spirit can the righteous requirements of the law be fulfilled.

If we are in Christ then the Spirit of God dwells in us and we live by the Spirit. We must also walk by the Spirit, which means to keep in step with or follow. We no longer live in the flesh, but can walk by the flesh, doing the deeds of the flesh. However if we live in Christ, the Spirit lives in us, we are obligated to walk by the Spirit.

"If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25).
