God is in control

"I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I create the light and make the darkness.
I send good times and bad times.
I, the Lord, am the one who does these things" (Isaiah 45:6-7).

An atheist friend of mine told me once, that religion was a way for people to deal with bad times. Does he understand God more than most and could the bad times that befall us be the very answer to pray? In a world that seems so full of trouble, anxiety, and fear it seems overwhelming and maybe this is the reason; in calamity we cry out to God, in distress we call upon His name.

"The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below
Will be forever mine
Will be forever mine
You are forever mine" -- Chris Tomlin, Amazing Grace

Jonah on his way to the bottom of the sea, David with the loss of his children, and Job in the loss of everything. In the end the calamity brings them closer to God, as Job stated, "I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you" (Job 42:5). I pray that you see God in these times.
