Manifested Glory: water into wine

Jesus's first miracle, water into wine, “this beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him” (John 2:11).

John gives us a good perspective of Jesus’s first miracle. No other reason was this miracle performed than to reveal His glory. "On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there” (John 2:1). On the third day of his ministry this happens, what is happening on day one and two? John's account differs in that the temptation is not mentioned, but we learn more if we look ahead a few days before the wedding.

John chapter one, day one of Jesus' ministry; “Behold the Lamb of God”, John baptizes Jesus and bears witness, “I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John 1:34). Day one and two; Jesus calls His first disciples, “come follow me”. He travels from Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing, to Cana where the wedding takes place, a nice little hike. Day three; “Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples” (John 2:2).

Mary, who seems to not just be a guest, says to Jesus “They have no wine”, Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come” (John 2:4). A knowing mother reacts to this by telling the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” We see Jesus react to His mother’s request and it would seem that He was not ready to reveal His glory yet. But He did and Jesus did his first miracle turning water into wine, which manifested His glory and His disciples believed in Him, v.11.

Jesus was at the beginning of His ministry. He was baptized in the Jordan River. The heavens open and the Holy Spirit descended upon him. John the Baptist gives testimony of Him. Jesus calls His first disciples. Jesus manifested His glory in His first miracle. His disciples believe.
