"To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 'He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.' When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 'He himself bore our sins' in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; 'by his wounds you have been healed.' For “you were like sheep going astray,' but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls" (1 Peter 2:21-25).
Jesus told a parable of a religious leader who thought himself more righteous than others, he treated others with contempt (Luke 18:9-20). We are warned of doing the same, "For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you" (Matthew 7:1-2). Since from the beginning of time God has sought the humble, "All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word" (Isaiah 66:2). We are to clothe ourselves with humility (1 Peter 5:1-11), not only to those in the church but to those who are lost.
"In humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:1-9).
Maybe a few would die for a righteous person but who would for a lowly sinner? Humble, even to the point of death. He is our example. "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out" (John 6:37). Come as you are, He will not cast you out, He is gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
