The Effects of God's Grace

I am giving thanks to my God, for the grace of God was given to you in Christ Jesus, for that in all enriched in him in all words and all knowledge just as the testimony of Christ was established among you so you do not lack in any gifts expecting the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:4-7)

The gift of grace came from God and those who receive grace, receive it abundantly also receiving the result or effects of grace, the gifts that come through grace, a justification by his blood where the outcome is our righteousness and life (Romans 5:16-18). Grace is an act of God that denotes results or effects, and the effects of God's grace are tremendous.

Grace came to us in Christ Jesus. In fact, I would say Jesus embodies the essence of God's grace as John writes we "gazed on his glory, the glory of the only begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). Jesus came from the Father, his fullness of grace, and from his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace (John 1:12; John 1:16). The Law was given to Moses but grace and truth came in Jesus Christ (John 1:17). Again in Romans 5, "much more did the grace of God and the gift in the grace of the one man Jesus Christ overflow to many." (Romans 5:15).

... for the grace (charis) of God was given to you in Christ Jesus... so you do not lack in any gifts (charisma) expecting the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:4-7)

The word (χάρισμα, "charis-ma") is often translated as gifts and has as its root word grace (χάρις "charis"). The "ma" added to Greek words denotes the result or effect of an action, a particular instance of an action, or the object of an action.* It is much like adding "-ment" in English. Acknowledg-ment is the act of acknowledging, and judgment is the act of judging, or the result or effect of judging. The "-ment" is added to a verb that forms a noun having the sense of "the action or result of what is denoted by the verb." In the same way the "-ma" is added to form charisma in Greek which denotes the result or effect of grace

Charisma is usually translated as gifts which come from God's grace. And the word charisma tells us grace has results or effects. Effect is defined as a change that is a result, or consequence of an action or other cause. In our featured verses, the result of grace is "that in all, enriched in him in all words and all knowledge" and "the testimony of Christ was established among you so you do not lack in any gifts (charisma)." Grace has other effects also.

... to the praise of his glorious grace in which he highly favored us in the beloved in whom we have received redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of the trespasses according to the riches of his grace... (Ephesians 1:)

All the spiritual blessings in the heavenly realms (being chosen, adopted, favored, redeemed, forgiven, and sealed with the Holy Spirit...) were gifted to us from the riches of his grace. Grace denotes its results or effects through charisma, the gifts. Or said another way the result or effect of grace is that we receive the charisma, the gifts, in Christ. In Ephesians 1, Paul writes of the above-mentioned spiritual blessings but he goes on to write our salvation is of grace, it is a gift from God. In other words, salvation is a gift or charisma or a result of grace.

even though you were dead of trespasses he made you alive with Christ, by grace existing saved (Ephesians 2:5)

You are not saved by anything you did, it is not of works lest you boast (Ephesians 2:8). And it is not of faith alone, it is a gift of grace. Of grace you are saved through faith. This is foolishness and a stumbling block to some but this is how God chose to do it, lest we boast in ourselves. "Now, you are from him in Christ Jesus, who became our wisdom from God, and these; righteousness and sanctification and redemption so just as it is written 'let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord'" (1 Corinthians 1:30-31). All gifts are to the praise of his glory, the grace which he favored us in the beloved, from the riches of his grace which he lavished on us in all wisdom and insight, according to his good pleasure, and from the counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:6-9,11). In Christ, we receive abundantly the gifts, effects of God's grace.

for of grace existing saved through faith and this is not from yourselves, of the gift of God, not from works so that no one boasts (Ephesians 2:8-9)

You are saved by Grace, so another result of grace's effect is salvation. It is received through faith, but it "by grace" or "of grace." "Since you were justified from faith you have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom we have [peace] also having access by faith to the extent of this grace in which we stand..." (Romans 5:1-2). You have access to grace or can approach his throne of grace through faith (Hebrews 4:16). I believe faith is a gift from God as the scriptures say believing is the work of God whereby God grants one to come to Jesus through his word and Spirit, Jesus existing the word and the author of faith.

for if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more reigning the one receiving the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness, reigns in life through the one man Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17)

You will reign through Christ because you received abundant grace and the gift of righteousness. By the effect of God's grace, we will master sin (Romans 6:14). You will reign because of Christ, because his righteous act brought justification. Justification is how we receive righteousness as a gift. "Justified, freely given of his grace, through redemption that in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:24). Justification is gift of grace. Christ redeemed us by paying the price for the debt of sin with his blood, therefore justification is through his blood, through redemption, the forgiveness or atonement for sin, of grace. And a person is justified through faith apart from works of the law (Romans 3:28).

so that just as sin reigned in death so also grace reigns through righteousness to the extent of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 5:21)

Righteousness is an effect of grace thus we will reign under grace through righteousness. An effect or gift (charisma) that comes through grace is justification (Romans 5:15-16). Adam's transgression was an act of sin with the result or effect of death. Jesus's obedience was an act of righteousness with the result or effect of justification and life. So much more does the grace of God and the gifts that come through grace overflow to many.

and he said to me 'My grace is sufficient for you, for the power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may abide in me (2 Corinthians 12:9)

The effect of God's grace is seen in this verse in that it is God's power at work maturing us to be like Christ. God's power is an effect of grace, lest we boast. We grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus. From the riches of God's grace, we have received many gifts (charisma or effects or results of grace) having received justification, righteousness, redemption, and life. We also in the new covenant of his blood, receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We are made alive, saved by grace, a new creation in Christ.

If God graciously gave (charizomai) Jesus how much more will he graciously give us all. The word graciously comes from grace (charis,) meaning this is how God exercises (the act of bringing into play or realizing in action) his grace. Through grace, God's power is realized, thus grace reigns through righteousness. The gifts that come through the one man Jesus, from the fullness and riches of God's grace, have a tremendous effect on those who are in Christ.

Those He Calls He Equips

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen . Hebrews 13:20-21 When God calls us he equips us, the God of Peace, the one who brought us from the dead by the blood of the Eternal Covenant, will equip you so to do his will. So in this concept of being equipped, we see the calling being irrevocable. "For it is God who works in you to Will and to act on behalf of his good pleasure." Philippians 2:13 God called you, he's working in you equipping you to work on behalf of his good pleasure. "So that the man of God may be complete fully equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:17 . In Hebrews 12 we read God disciplines those he loves, so that we share in his holy character, as the scriptures

He Cares About You

Casting all your anxiety on him because he cares about you (1 Peter 5:7) You know what is the secret to being able to cast your anxieties on him? Knowing that he cares for you. If you do not believe that someone cares you will not share your anxieties and burdens with them. Knowing that God cares and values you makes a difference. Look at the birds of the air; neither do they sow nor reap nor gather in storehouses, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than them? (Matthew 6:26-34) Birds don't sow to have seed to eat later, they don't gather food for the winter, yet God feeds them. Look at the lilies and how they grow, not toiling nor spinning. If he cares for the birds and clothes the flowers in such glory, how much more will he value and care for you? What do you have to be anxious about if you know he cares about you? If men being bad know how to give good things to their children how much more will God give good things to his children who ask.

Children of God

but as many as receiving him to them he gave the right to become children of God, the ones believing in his name, the ones born not from blood nor from fleshly will nor from a husband's will, rather from God (John 1:12-13) Something really significant happened in regard to the kingdom of God when Jesus came. When Jesus began his ministry he made this statement to Israel, " Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand ." It is really a statement to Israel to turn, and repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Things are changing in regard to the kingdom. I truly tell you, unless a person is born from above, he is not of the kingdom of God (John 3:3) Not of the kingdom of God is the same as saying not being children of God. Being born from above is the same as saying being born from God of the Spirit. What changed significantly in the new covenant is how one enters the kingdom of God; through being born anew.  Born gain is what some translate this word as. Nicodemus certa
