In this verse Peter is writing a sign of a pure heart is love. God is love. God is pure. Love flows from a pure heart. Jesus said the world will know we are his disciples not by how much we give or serve him, but by how much we love one another (John 13:35). Now, we can say it is based upon obedience as he commands us to love one another. John writes if we hate our brother we walk not in the light but in darkness. Of course, the fullness of God comes from knowing of the heights, widths, breaths, and depths of his surpassing love (Ephesians 3:16-20). As we grow in grace and in knowledge of Jesus, into purity, a sign of that is brotherly and agape love.
